i have a question regarding the Odyssea light fixtures. i know its 50/50 with reviews and im not gonna lie the claims of catching fire concern me heavily considering i leave my apartment quite a bit while the lights would be on.

is the general consensus that these arent so good of fictures because of the ballasts and bulbs? i have an Icecap ballast lined up and planned that id seek better bulbs anyhow. so if those are the issues then i shouldnt be worried.. or is it the physical wiring inside the fixture that is still suspect?

i would just buy a more well known brand but it seems i cant really find what im looking for. the odyssea is perfect for what i want but im not about to risk the safety of the surrounding environment..

It's a combination of sub par cooling and cable management inside the fixture coupled with unreliable ballasts that makes them unattractive. Most recently though, it's just the ballasts, most folks end up replacing them in short order, which about negates the cost savings with the initial investment.

Spend a few more bucks and get a reliable fixture up front, it'll save you money in the long run. If the Odyssea fits your needs, then so will a fixture by another manufacturer, after all they simply copy the big name manufactures, rather then design their own.

Chris is right, my experience with Odyssea is not only the sub par ballasts but also the wiring, if you do buy one, open it up and check to make sure all of the wiring is solid and secure. I have found loose connections and that is very dangerous. Overall it is a crappy fixture and not worth the headache. I know some people have had good luck with them but there is nothing of quality in them, which is why they are so cheap. Skimping on lights is a bad idea and costly, because you will be replacing parts on them.
