it is not cheaper but it is convinient, growing phyto is like milking the cow every morning to get milk, when the grocery store has it already in a container.
Depends on how much you value your time Ed and the scale of your operation. I know of more then a handfull of companies that haved saved millions on switching over You can eliminate the culture room, techs to run it and the over head.
Also depends on what you're trying to grow with the phyto. Some animals apparently do better with live algae, some are fine with paste. What are you trying to grow?
I'm growing brine shrimp and pods now. I will be starting rotifers soon. I have nannochlorposis and im going to get a couple other types of microalgae's. I'm also interested in any info about a high production copepod setup.
I also like to feed my reef microalgae's.
How does the paste work? Is it just a high concentration of microalgae and u just put a small amount in the targert tank?
What type of copepods? Harpacticoids are likely fine with algae (best nutrition) paste and ground up flake food or something. With algae paste, start off with really small doses as it's easy to overdo it.
Calanoids are supposed to be another thing altogether.
harpacticoids do fine with pastes that I do know, you may look at isochrysis for them as an addition as the different size helps encourage better eating. IMHO, over the counter is much easier at a cost, how much is your time worth?
