Microbacter 7

I got all the Brightwell Aquatics supplies I needed from Salty Critter (MB7 & CoralAmino). They weren't listed on the site, but I shot Dan an email and he got back to me quick with the prices for everything I was looking for.

I was at the store last week and didnt see any but I should have asked. Serves me right. Oh well maybe another trip up there is in order lol

who's all using it and how do you like it? Im interested too.

I tried vodka and then VSV with MB7 dosing. I thought it sucked.
It was an 11 month wasted exercise that made my SPS way too sensitive to Alk and the system was way too fragile and way too much work. Went with GFO, purigen and reeflo 250 skimmer and ditched the carbon dosing like a bad habit. Now, my SPS are finally starting to look the way they should and I'm not having to test the water as much or worry about alk sensitivity. If you have a fish only setup it's probably the way to go for nutrient control.

What's GFO?

Granular Ferric Oxide.

It primarily removes the phosphates, which inhibit coralline, and coral growth and can promote hair algae. GFO keeps the -0- to .03 level that's accepted as the sweet spot range for great coralline/coral growth with little to no micro algae problems.

You only need a little for an SPS system. And at startup you need to test for phosphate and then use less GFO than called for and turn the flow down and bump up the flow and the amount you are using slowly to prevent shock to SPS. And you use a reactor (phosban or GEO reactors for example) that has pump on it powerful enough to churn the GFO inside of it to keep it from "rusting" or oxidizing into a hard clump. This also keeps the surface area exposed on the particle for maximum phosphate absorbortion.

Bulk Reef Supply is a good supplier for it.

Also, Fosters and Smith has both the MB7 and their brand of GFO which will also work so maybe you can kill 2 birds if you still wish to try the MB7. They have a couple of the GFO media reactors as well.

I do add a bit of MB7 to my system with no vodka dosing with alternating dosages of microbe-lift special blend. These two alternative beneficial bacteria strains are added to the system under the same premise of the reason why carbon dosers use it. I add them to keep beneficial bacteria numbers high as an insurance policy against cyano bacteria/algae hybred from growing. The corals seem to like it for some reason and with the little bit I use the bottles of each are still from when I was carbon dosing.

I notice a alk drop when I add new gfo, that could be part of the sps tip burn you will see if you add too much initially other than dropping the phosphates too quickly. I also had problems with carbon dosing, seemed like the acros flesh was getting thinner as they became very sensitive to alk swings and lighting.

Hows purigen work for you? I run gfo and carbon.

Purigen is set it and forget as long as it's not dark. Then recharge and repeat. I test once a week for alk and such. Things were so loopty loop when I was carbon dosing I had to monitor the alk sometimes daily. Big time rollercoaster. Why it even cut into my RC posting time. No manners at all.
