Micron bags vs. Live rock as prefilter

in my work experience, i have seen systems very large (and relatively small) that, in the sump where the raw overflow enters, there is no form of passive mechanical filtration i.e. no micron bags or foam, just live rock right before the rest of the filtration stages, and the systems are all very healthy. These systems have been at wholesalers and retail stores. Now, I have always thought that you must have, in this order, mechanical filtration first and then chemical/bio, since particulate will clog carbon and reduce skimmer/UV efficiency. How does this lack of a micron bag work???

Does the detritus just get comsumed by an army of microcrustaceans and disappear, or what?? Im trying to set up a 200-300 gallon SPS growout system right now, and I would prefer to not have to change micron bags all the time... i also dont like the fact that sediment in the micron bags will simply sit in the bag and leech out DOM and toxins. I know Anthony Calfo mentioned using Aiptasia chambers for mechanical filtration, but can the live rock gonna achieve the same thing??

Many people run Live Rock and a few power heads as the only filter on small tanks. I personally can't believe it works that well. The amount of junk that collect in my filter sock is a few days is amazing. R

yeah, i clean my bag very often on my 100 gal... however, i see large systems (1,000 gal+) with large bioloads with raw overflow water going onto live rock/bioballs and directly into skimmers/fluidized beds!! when i ask the retailer/wholesaler about it, they just say, "i dunno...we just never use floss or socks, and we dont have problems." I also have noticed the huge population of copepods in these sumps, but i wonder if they can really do that good of a job? it would be nice to keep it natural...

In my sump, I have the water flow over several filter pads before it goes over the live rock. Most of the detritus is picked up by the pads, but some still manages to get through to the rock.

I just have some rubble in my sump, no filter or sock. There is an army of bristleworms/pods in the rubble that keep it pretty clean.

i keep 1 filter pad above the live rock, and it keeps the water a lot clearer. I have tried it with out any mechanical filter and the water just looks cloudier.

I also use a sock filter and when I don't use for a couple days I can def see the difference the socks clear up the water so much.

socks are good, but it would cut down on maintenance so much to eliminate them... i used to hate cleaning six or eight bags every day...

you said this is a sps grow out tank. as we all know, with sps the cleaner the water the better. so socks are the way to go.

Good lord....on 1 tank ???????? I clean mine daily, sometimes every other day. I've never heard of this many socks being used in 1 day.

i have a sock on my 58 and it will last a week before i change it out...much clearer water..i just have3 socks and when 2 get dirty i throw them in the washer with a little bleach and thats it....
