Okay so this excites and scares me....
I have heard several good things a microscope can be used for in this hobby and have been looking into getting one....quick search revealed there are several different types, grades and magnification strengths.

What one do you use and why?

I'm not looking to break the bank...honestly one of these $70 usb 50x - 500x seem awesome but if they are poop then I will wait till I can afford a good one.

Thanks in advance!

What exactly would you use a microscope for? You can definitely use a $70-100 microscope. They work pretty well and should be fine for the occasional peek at organisms in your aquarium.

You can always do without a microscope. It's more of a cool factor to have one.
If youre going for the cool factor, then I suggest you wait until you can afford a good one :D otherwise there really is no need for one

Awesome yeah I mainly want it for the cool factor....was just hoping these 2500x magnification wernt needed but I am also finding out I would be paying for the ability to take microscopic photos as well which really excites me I may hold out for a good one of these guys thanks for the info!

I used a cheap (50-100 dollar) microscope for a brief time with my kids (homeschooling biology). It was a pain in the ... to use, and the images were not great. It did not exactly excite my kids about microscopy, and we hardly ever used it.

Then I scored a (used) $750 microscope for about $200 and the difference is incredible.

So if you are wanting one mostly for the 'fun' aspect of looking at tiny critters up close, I'd wait, because the cheap ones are probably not going to be fun.

Perfect this is essentially exactly the answer I was looking for! Sucks because my wallet definitely can't afford it right now but glad I didn't buy something I would regret!
