Mike's 300 Double-D

Thats awful, you both should be praised for your continued patience in the hobby. I dont know how i would feel if I had gone through your trials...I do however have a good idea of what my wife would be saying!

Of all the places to fail......

I guess five days might be easier for you guys since it would put the re-re-move on this coming weekend, but I would agree with your silicone guy that three days should be enough. It will be absolutely done leaching any acetic acid and have reached the majority of its strength by then. Since overflows have water on both sides of them there is very little pressure being placed on it.

My heart goes out to you guys!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and well wishes... We truly are appreciative. We're exhausted and still a bit stunned. Hopefully, this is the last "bump in the road" and we can move forward from here.

That is just horrible. Did you guys go with the same tank manufacturer after the first one? This is simply unforgivable if it is truly on their end. Thank goodness you both love the hobby and can support one another. If this were a household where one spouse didn't like the tank this would certainly be the end of it all. Best of luck in the coming weeks, I wish I could help you out in person, but Virginia is a bit of a drive from southern California :hmm4:

Keep on keepin' on!!

Yes, the replacement tank was custom built by the same manufacturer and was handled by our LFS as the original tank was less than 6 months old.

WOW!!!!
Did you take pictures of everything, and do you plan on passing the expense of hiring a professional to come re-silicone the cover on for you? (pass it on to marineland and see what they say?)

Just curious, did you double check the glass internal overflow to make sure that it was still secured good?
most have a internal glass overflow with just a thin acrylic cover.

Yes, we have taken pictures and rounded up our receipts. We also contacted the manufacturer and they are working with us regarding the warranty.

The overflow box is made of 3/8" thick acrylic and does not have an inner layer of glass like you would see with an Oceanic. The original silicone used to adhere the sides of the box to the glass was very thin 1/8" on glass and 1/8" on acrylic and was only used on the outside of the box.

Thanks Alex! Our silicone guy did say 3 days and if we could give it another day, that would be even better. Friday is day 4 and we want to water test before we attempt the daunting task of moving everything back as we don't want anymore surprises. We also want to minimize the stress on our livestock as much as possible. Not to mention, it would be very difficult to take yet another day off from work. :)

We're hopeful our livestock will weather this latest ordeal well and we won't have anymore losses. Our Kole tang was the most stressed (he's sensitive anyway and has been MIA since the move to the vat). This also could not have been a worse time to add new wrasses to the dt, but so far they are doing ok. We purchased a portable A/C unit for the garage, since temperatures are climbing into the upper 80's here and we don't have any of these vats plumbed into the chiller...expensive, but cheap compared to losing all of our livestock.

Thanks again for the well-wishes. We'll keep you all posted as this action thriller continues...

I cant believe there is no glass backing.....
But, i have built smaller tanks with no backing.... (but i used a bunch of silicone on inside, seam and outside. (i know silicone doesnt adhere to acrylic the best, so a little extra and some good prep helps. )

Keep us updated!
and whens the water test?

sorry, i found the fill date.

but, since its still fresh, have you thought of buying some 1/4 or 3/8 plate and making your own backing? because the silicone is still fresh, its the perfect time to do it.

you may be able to do it with the acrylic in place.
just an option

Man that sucks tank failure again. I would be contacting the tank manufacturer. Never give up, keep going good and bad its all part of the hobby. I love this hobby and cant imagine not having a reef tank. Good for you for sticking with it. I hope you have no more issues with the tank.

Seems like you guys can never get a break! Sorry to hear the unfortunate new. It will be well worth it when all is said and done..good luck!!

I just read this whole thread from page 1, and let me just say, WOW! You are the most devoted couple I have seen in this hobby. Amazing...

Wow, that is absolutely amazing. 2 failures like this!
Least it was just a headache and no house damage.

I would be having nightmares for quite some time if that tank was in my house!
Good luck, wish I was around to help.

Mike - i am so sorry to see this happen to you guys again!! I have noticed that there is no silicone on the inside edge of the overflows on my standard 300 DD. I am definitely going to leak test it but after seeing what happened to you I already know I am going to silicone the inside of the overflows!!!

I can't believe there was another failure! Thank god it was relatively minor. However, I know how much of a PAIN it is emptying and restocking a large tank. Youre stronger than me, I would have thrown the tank out the window (or maybe left the bad overflow box. Lol).

Your a better man than me Gunga Din! I would have switched to knitting or needlepoint!
I just spent 2 hours reading from start to finish, this is some compelling stuff!
Best of luck from here forward.

Wish us luck...

Wish us luck...

Water test tonight...

In the meantime, here's a video of our fish in the Tuff Stuff stock tank:

Sorry about the poor quality - the camera kept trying to focus on the bird netting. We peeled back one layer of the netting while recording and it helped some. :p

I have a feeling they thought they were about to be fed!

Do your female leopard wrasses associate with your male?

Alex, if they had seen a food bottle, they would have been swarming, lol. They were begging "politely" though... ;)

The male leopard will circle around the girls some and occasionally "graze" for pods with them. We haven't had them very long and they are obviously still juveniles. I would guess as they start to mature, the male will begin to pay more attention. We were a little worried about adding them since he has been the lone leopard for a long time, so we used an acclimation box and thankfully there were no issues.
