Mike's 300 Double-D

Rhomboids are one of my favorites. My LFS is supposed to be getting me some but they never come. (it cool though I need to calm down on my fish purchases anyway). Yours look beautiful, where did they come from? How many did you get?

Thanks guys! We couldn't be happier with them.

Brett, they are a male and female pair. We acquired them from Pacific Island Aquatics (PIA). I was a little worried about them being shipped UPS, but they arrived in great condition and an hour early. :D

1 Year Anniversary

1 Year Anniversary

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of our catastrophic tank failure.

Still feel sick when I see this pic:

FTS Today:

It's been a long, hard road to get to where we are today and we could not have done it without all of the help and support from our AWESOME reef friends!

was that tank failure #1, or #2?

also, whos your UPS driver?? are you sure it was UPS?? they never show up early or with boxes in tact! (he must be new! hahaha)

Mike and Terry, your tanks is beautiful. here's to many years of trouble free reefing. Glad you stuck with it through the hard times.

Congratulations!

Your flame wrasse in the current FTS looks absolutely vibrant, but I couldn't help but notice that your snails appear to be having a party in the top left corner.

Mike I am thinking about an upgrade to a 300DD, but with your problems and a few others not sure if I want to risk it. Do you or marineland know what caused your tank to fail?
Thanks,
Pat

Subscribed - Just placed my order for my 300 DD Marinland with starfire on all three sides.. Gonna use this thread for idea's!:)

Your tank looks great.
Glad you made it through the storm with no problems except no power
i hope that one day my tank will lokk as good as yours.

looking at the pic from a year ago it shows what an impressive job you have both done. The new fts looks amazing!!

Mike, I've really loved following your fascinating thread. Your tank is certainly a "motivator!"

Quick question, if you have a moment: Do you ever net your fish when transferring from QT to the tank, or do you have another method of doing that? I've heard it argued that fish should not be netted if at all possible, so I'm doing a little research...

Either way works. The thing you have to look out for is the barb on tangs, trigger, etc. This can get caught up in the net and cause difficulties. The smaller the holes in the net generally the better. If you can catch your fish barehands by all means go for it, you'd have to bring out the 'fish whisperer' if you do so! :strooper:

:spin1: LoL @ David. You know, it actually is a new driver... he must not be beat down yet by the grueling hours and...

Thanks Brett. Patience and persistence are on the business card of every successful reefer, no? How's your cycle coming along - the slime starting to clear up?

Alex, so good to hear from you. Those snails are probably thinking there is safety in numbers - our big male leopard wrasse can chow down on some snails if they get out in an exposed situation! Good thing the ceriths breed so fast. Thanks for your longtime support of our work. We hope your system is recovering from the recent problems... are things better?

Hi Pat. It is a hard decision when investing in a large tank! We will likely never know what caused our failure. As you might imagine, we get this question a lot from people thinking about going with the 300DD, and our advice is this: Marineland is in the business of mass producing affordable stock aquariums. They couldn't afford to have widespread quality problems with tanks that retail for close to $2,000. If you want custom work, it's probably better to go with a custom builder, but if you want the stock tank at that nice price the Marineland is a viable choice. Just bear in mind if you want to drill or modify the tank after you've received it, there goes your factory warranty (which may or may not matter to you).

Good luck! We'll be watching for your build thread.

Thanks. Our generator will get some loving care here heading into the fall - a nice tune up, oil change, etc. It certainly came through for us with Irene.

Thanks Matt! Your build is coming along nicely (though you need to post an UPDATE!!!). When you fly over to the states, come by and help us with some tile work hahaha! You obviously have some mad skills there.

I still can't believe the colors of your coral. The tank looks amazing!

LN - you're too kind. We have been working on our coralscaping (is that a word yet?); Terry and I bought livestock for each other for our 20th wedding anniversary. We'll try to get some pics this weekend and post them up.

Love the rhomboids!

Us too! After the first day in the QT, they both broke out in a wicked case of ich, so we immediately started hypo-salinity treatment. That's been a week now, so we have 3 more weeks to go and they are looking great. Hypo works very well against the ich, and keeping them in the QT allows us to fatten them up and keep a very close eye on them. Can't stress enough the importance of QT for all new additions.

We agree with that. Actually, from everything we read from trusted sources and from our own experience, you should avoid netting or touching the fish if at all possible. Everyone with fish should have one of these dip and pour containers; they're inexpensive and work great for catching and transferring.

Top shelf build, very inspiring! Thanks for sharing your passion with us! :)

Tank is looking fantastic!

Thanks to you both for the kind words. We'll be taking some pics this weekend for a bit of an update for both the display and the 'back office'... Here's a teaser:
