Milwaukee or Pinpoint?

I need a PH meter. I can get the Milwaukee PH Controller for $79.00 or the Pinpoint PH meter for $80.00. Which would be the best buy & why? Thanks for any advice. I do not use CO2.

IMO.....Pinpoint.

I owned both because I wanted to save money just as you probably do. The Milwaukee crapped out on me in less than six months. It was the handheld PH meter, now it wont calibrate and it gives a different reading everytime it goes in the water. there is no way to repair it. It is now just a 40 dollar piece of junk.

vs. PINPOINT.

Easy as pie to calibrate, has worked for me consistently for one year. Replaceable probes!!!!

I don't have any experience with Milwaukee Controllers however.

If your not using CO2 and do not plan to, I would say go with the Meter....

Just my two cents.

I would get the milwaukee controller if you ever plan on running a calcium reactor. That way, you already have a controller. You don't need co2 to use the controller.

I have a Milwaukee and the only problem I have had with it is my probe failed after about 6 months. As mentioned above by hurleycr the handheld pen-style pH meters from Milwaukee are junk. I bought one, it was dead ou of the box (only showed "Er" on the screen) took it back and tested the replacement in the store (worked fine) put it in box took it home and it wouldn't even power up. I immediately took it back and bought the non-handheld version (justa meter though, not a controller)

Never had a problem with it except the premature probe death.

Milwaukee comes with an AC adapter and no battery compartment, Pinpoint has a compartment for a 9V battery, but no AC adapter from my research on these.

I like Milwaukee, but have never used pinpoint controllers, i have the pinpoint wireless thermometer and it constantely starts looking for diferent transmiters, I called pinpoint, they told me this was normal!!
I have both Milwaukee ph and the orp units and I have no complaints, they do come with standard grade probes but pinpoint do as well, this type probe has a limited use life assuming you clean them and calibrate them properly and timely. I plan to replace the probes once they are done with the more "industrial heavy kind"
as far as the PH pen is concern i also got one and it crap out in like six months, i called milwaukee, they had me do a few test over the phone then ask me to send the piece to them for replacement. I got a brand new one the next week, Nice!

I've had both and am still using the Milwaukee. The Pinpoint crapped out on me after about 8 months. Maybe just a bad unit but no problems with the Milw at all.

Where do you guys buy replacement probes. I need a new one for my milwaukee ph controller. I was thinking of using a heavy duty one.

Thanks TimBob,

That's a good price. Does anyone know if other brands of probes are interchangeable? Like will a pinpoint fit and work in a milwaukee. I'm assuming that they all read in a silmilar fashion like 0-10v or 4-20 ma. I haven't stuck a meter on mine to find out how it's reading. I could swear I have read this info in another thread but I can't remember.

Marine Depot sells an AC adapter for around $9 I believe.

I have used both and the milwaukee is junk imo... died on me after one month and when i tried to get an rma on it i was told is isnt warrantyable... I will never buy their products again.

Besides the pinpoint flat out works and havent had to warranty their products thus far.

I have ran a Milwaukee controller for a couple of years now and never had a problem. It was a great addition for my calcium reactor.

I looked in my log last night and I put my milwaukee online in the summer of 2003. That's going on three years now and no problems other than my probe is shot. They do have a life expectancy you know. I had my tank overflow about a year ago and soak the controller. I dried it out and it ran just fine. I think we see a couple of lemons and everyone complains about it. The people that have good experiences need to chime in a little more often so a reader can get a good feel for the product before makeing a decision.
