Hi, would a Mimic Tang be ok for my 105g tank?

The display is 42'' long and will have a 56g sump (So roughly 160g)

This will be the only tang...

Thanks :spin3:

Thank you for the reply Tina :)

Great to know they have a nice personality, i think they also go through a really nice colour change (I'll be going for the Lemonpeel Mimic)

Anyone have any ideas on QT procedures? How long and whether they are especially prone to WS?

Not what i was hoping to hear to be honest :(

I chose the Mimic specifically because it is A) Generally a smaller tang B) Is somewhat of a grazer and C) Thought my tank would be acceptable...

They are great fish, your tank is just a little on the small side. If you really want a tang in that tank footprint I would recommend a Kole or one of the other small bristletooth tangs.

I don't like any Bristletooth variety of tang in all honesty.

Its funny because if i had a 75g 4ft or a 100g 5ft it would be fine, here i am with a 42'' 105g and its not big enough

Sadly thats the only length i can allow.

I personally would say no. While that amount of gallons makes it sound good, the 42" long is too short.

I wouldn't either. The length is too short for the tang to have enough straight-through swimming room.

I've got one in my 180 (lemonpeel mimic) in my 180 with other tangs. I would still recommend it since it is more of a wanderer/meander-er around the tank grazing, instead of darting from one end of the tank to the other. It is a really sedate type tang (or at least mine is, LOL). liveA, says a min of 70 gallons and the tang guide here says 75, so your tank should be plenty for this type of tang.

What about one of the smaller butterflyfish, such as the Latticed or Double Saddle or Dot-Dash...assuming you don't have a reef tank (although that might be why you said "No Angels").

A 75 is 4 feet long. The tank in this thread, is only 3.5 feet long, so in the important aspect it is smaller.

I would love a Copperband but it'll be an LPS dominated system, hence no Angels ;)

Thanks for the replies so far.

The yellow pyramid Butterfly does look very nice and they get quite large so it would be a magnificent centre piece fish...

Ive kept a purple tang in a 90 gallon tank for 10 years. He is happy as can be,never gets ick and has never had any other proublems.I cant see why a mimic wouldnt work.

Is your tank 4ft?

Those 6 inches make all the difference...apparently anyway

There are always going to be divided opinions on tangs unless your tank happens to be the size of the Ocean :p

No. But there will be if your tank is a tweener size like yours or mine. A 42 inch tank is not a tang tank. But there's a billion other awesome fish you could have. Think wrasses.
