Mind Sharing what filtration your using?

I am using a CPR Bak Pak skimmer and a fluval 304 cannister. What are you using? And what are some useful media to keep in hand? Currently just using floss.

On my 70 FO tank I have a Marineland Tidepool II and an ASM G-2 skimmer. The filter is rated for 125 gallons (I think) and the skimmer is rated for 300.

The filter is really just a bio-wheel. I use floss pads and carbon pads. The filter has 3 trays for media. I sometimes use a poly filter pad too.

Yes, I'm sure this is all overkill but I like to be sure.

hmm i know mine isnt a FO but in my aggressive 125 reef i use a 29G sump with about 1/4 of it a fuge, a Precision marine bullet I skimmer, i keep a carbon bag in the filter sock, and i keep a fluval 205 with a few bags of purigen, that and i do about a 20% water change every 2-3 weeks, when i upgrade to the bigger tank i will most likely try and use a 125 as a sump and have about 1/3 of that be the fuge and get a much bigger skimmer

lots of rock, lots of cheato and a big skimmer. I also change 50 gallons of water each week.

I have 200+ lbs of rock in my 210 and an ASM G4X skimmer. I run a Ampmaster 3600 return pump so the rock is my main filtration.

Wow everyone usese carbon, Is it true that carbon causes HLLE? for tangs and angels? I read it somewhere that its linked to it. Has anyone noticed any affects of long term use of carbon in FOWL? And would purgeon be a better replacement?

i love purigen right after a water change, it will take out any impurities i missed and then after its exhausted i will switch it out with carbon

i used purigen once and there were tiny little balls all over the place, even though i used the purigen bag it didnt matter to much.
its kinda fun to play with tho :p

i use HOB filters on all my tank, FO and reef. the kind with the disposable cartridges. i get the topfin brand at petsmart, its a knock-off of the whisper filters, better and cheaper.
been using hob on my reefs for 3 years and no problems yet.
i change out the cartridge every three weeks and run carbon or phosban for a few days.
i dont have tangs so i wouldnt know about the carbon and HLLE

i will tell ya one thing though, a few years back on my cichlid tank, i would run chemipure carbon all the time, and 90% of my cichlids came down with hole in the head disease.
i ditched the chemipure and ive never had another fish with it again...coincodence??? not sure, could be, but its not worth it to me to risk it

oh yeah and i run a cheapo prizm skimmer

Hmm purigen I have to look into that. I do have a feeling carbon causes HLLE, my friend has a yellow tang and when he was running matrix the tang got some hlle and when the carbon was removed it was clean again.... I have a 304 cannister and wondered what are some good media I should use? Any suggestions other than carbon?????

hmm i havent had any problems with the tangs i have and hlle, my vlamingii and sohal are perfectly healthy, except my sohal has a pretty nasty scar from the LFS right above its head but its not HLLE as i have seen what it looks like and this just looks like a fish bit him above the eye

happface, i came across an article that mentions hlle and carbon.
it doesnt appear that it causes a problem in tangs, its more like a vitamin (A and C) deficency, and an iodine deficency??
i kinda forgot allready lol
but heres the link

either way if you suspect it can be caused by carbon, then dont run carbon.
i for one will never keep a tang because they are more trouble than they are worth :p
i steer clear from ich magnets! :D

hmm well it must be from me soaking their food in vitamins and dosing the tank with vitamins that mine stay pretty healthy, i think i use about 2ml of selcon a day

75 - orca systems recirc protein skimmer rated to 110, phosban reactor, carbon, live rock, water changes every 2-3 weeks

125 - eheim canister w/ surface extractor (floss, poly, carbon, phosban occassionally), live rock, water changes every 2-3 weeks

20 - eheim canister (floss), live rock, monthly water changes

I don't have any problems with my blue, yellow or convict tangs and HLLE in the tanks I'm running carbon, but I also feed them nori and selcon/garlic/vitamin c soaked food.

90g predators tank, BB, high bioload: LR, oversized skimmer ASM G-3, used micron sock before, phosphate removing media (wish, if I could afford RowaPhos all the time), in case of emergency - carbon.
Tried Purigen for several months in smaller tanks, didn't see any difference.

Whats the use of phosban/phosphate remover? In a FOWL?? I thought it was for reef tanks? And how do you use this phosban stuff? Do I need a reactor? Or do I just toss it in my cannister?
