Mind Sharing what filtration your using?

my bad, i do only use it in my reef tanks filter box
too many tanks, i cant keep track :lol:

but if you would like to know, i fill a filter sock about half way with a phosphate sponge (i use kent)
i keep it in the filters box for 48 hours then i take it out and throw away the used phoshate pellets.
i rinse the sock, leave it out to dry and use it again in 3-4 weeks :)

but it can work out in a fowlr, because it is possible that phosphates inhibit the growth of coralline algae. so if you want alot of purple in yer tank then keep phosphates at a minimum.
i have fish only in one tank, no live rock at all, so yeah i dont use phosban in that tank :D
 
Thanks for the info but the two people above you mentioned using phos aswell. I almost thought it was used to absorb fish waste or something.
 
i believe carbon soaks up some nutrients...not sure on this one.
it has to be fresh and changed out quickly
i run carbon for 48 hours only also, and just once a month
 
Has anyone tried using live rock in their cannister as filtration? If so do you need a light system in the cannister or can it run as is?
 
Using the LR in canister filter should be in this thread.
I used canister filter for filtration, had to clean every 3 days (a lot of waste was collected, and it started to decompose if more than 3 days), and the canister is quite difficult to open.

Phosphate removers: have to use, my tank produces a lot of phosphates, have to lower them somehow. Refugium didn't helped.

CHANGE ABOUT 20GAL EVERY 1 TO 2 WEEKS. WATER QUALITY HAS BEEN GREAT!!

I went by the bare-bottom tank route - everything (except under the Starboard) is visible and is removed manually, before it starts to decompose.

As for filtration for high bioloads:

For processing ammonia and nitrites - amount of LR or other surfaces for bacteria to live on, like Seachem Pond Matrix (I used oly playn Matrix, Pond kind is bigger). If tests show no ammonia - you have enough media for your bioload (after the cycling is finished).

For reducing nitrates - DSB in a bucket or RDSB (remote deep sand bed, googling RC will give the links), or denitrators (didn't found any easy and convenient). Macroalgae should help for nitrates and phosphates, if you can keep refugium without red cyano and acoel worms, I couldn't.

Phosphates - refugium with macroalgae or phosphate removing media, permanently in the sump. I like effect on aquarium life of RowaPhos, but on cheaper side there are aluminum based media like PhosGuard or Phosphate Sponge.

That is what I tried.

BTW, the big skimmer, producing a lot of smallest bubbles (needlewheel pump), is no guaranty, that the water will be cleaned. I will try to replace my very big ASM G-3 with gravity fed DIY skimmer, by Waynee Sallee.
 
bare bottom is the best way to go in keeping nitrates at their lowest IMO
i find the filter needs to be cleaned out more of waste, but better in the filter and rinsed down the drain than sitting in your tank stuck under a rock :p

kents nitrate sponge is ok. ive used that once in awhile

I run my tank BB with LOTS of flow, about 160#'s of LR, 50 gallon refugium, 2 phosban reactors, bag of carbon, 1 filter sock on the drain and a big skimmer plumbed inline.

Keeps the fish happy and growing :-) (maybe too fast ;) )

not as of right now, I don't know how I would run a skimmer in line with my FX5. I have been considering it. The only way I see possible is running the skimmer seperate of the rest of the filtration, and this doesn't seem to make sense. Got any suggestions?
 
Do you have a sump and if not than what do you think about hang on tank skimmers? You can get a awsome skimmer for a cheap price that can match the octopus 150 skimmer. Heres a link if you have time read through it.

No I'm running just the canister, unfortunatly hang on skimmers will not work as the tank is backed up against a wall and there is literally only about 2 inches of room. And the canopy for the thing also gets in the way. It's running like this

overflow, line to canister in, line out of canister to UV, UV out back into the tank, and back through PVC across the tank to loc line on the otherside of the tank.
 
I'm sure eventually I will figure it out. The system as of right now depends on that 535gph flowing from the canister because it creates a good flow pattern.
