A long time ago, when i was in college, my roomate and i had one of these. I graduated and moved from sf to chi town. 2 yrs later my roomate graduated and fed ex him to me on a 100 degree summer day. he survived, and lived in my tank for another 5 yrs. He was 8, when i think some *** clown at a party i had put something in the tank. RIP Otto.

Anyway, im think about setting up a 180 with another one.

What else can you stock with these?

i would say definitely nothing smaller than it, and they grow fast so even if he is bought small, don't add anything with a slower growth rate...they eat anything that fits in their beak..you could probably do a lion with it, and probably a good sized angel, possibly Koran, or Blueface, something like that...beautiful fish though make sure you post some pics when you get him!

Triggers would be okay as long as they are larger than the grouper.

Butterfly I wouldnt, they dont compete well for food, espicially with a grouper in the water.

Groupers are pretty territorial, so I wouldn't go with more groupers. Large Angels, butterflies, wrasses like green birds, coris gaimard or tuskfish, Moray's, lionfish, puffers, and triggers. Basically anything that is too big to eat :D

yea no groupers should be in there with it, they will fight over territory almost certain...if its was a larger system 300g or something, you could pull that off with alot of LR but not in a 180.

I re-recommend a passer angel, as they are aggressive and hold there own. As far as butterflies, I do think you could get away with a large Raccoon butterfly.

One thing to keep in mind with a miniatus; I've seen many tanks that have one, and the only reason you know it's in there is a streak of red when you feed the tank. It darts out from hiding, then shoots back into its hole. A lot of people end up disappointed with owning this fish, even though it looks great.

I'm not sure if your other one was like this, but just be aware that a new one may be.
