Miniatus Grouper

Yes, they still look bright red when they are adults. 180 should be fine if you get it small and let it grow into. If you get a pretty small one (like 3-4") you should be ok for a while. I kept one for about a year but he was very dominant and aggressive. I hate trading fish but I had to do it. Great fish though and adds A LOT of character to the tank. I have some pictures saved in another PC. I will put them up later.

they can be quite agresseve especially as they get bigger..But a beautiful fish...Usually they are only agressive when another fish enters their territory...the problem is when they define the tank as theirs, they can become a handfull

I have a Miniatus Grouper in a 135 Gallon Tank with a SaddleBack Grouper and He Ignores the SaddleBack Grouper. He Shares this Home with Several Other Fish and He Seems Okay.I would Say That This is the Third Most Agressive Grouper Fish That I have Seen. Some Caution should Be shown with your Choice of Tank Mates. The Normal Crew Should be Fine Triggers Snappers Ect Best Wishes Snapper66.

I purchased a young Grouper many years ago.
The Importer, myself, and my pals, who have kept Marine Predators for 4 Decades, was convinced that the young fish was a "Mirror" image of a healthy "Miniata Grouper"
However, the Grouper displayed different body shape as it grew and mattured, and became "Ferocious" in its behaviour, always swimming in the water column, and never hiding, like the "Miniata" does.
I have since discovered the Grouper is a "Plectropomus Maculatus".
So be aware when purchasing a new, and young, "Miniata" You may be getting more than you bargained for.

It's not uncommon for them to hide like crazy. I've seen several tanks where the only reason you know there's a miniatus is the red streak that darts out for food and then dives back behind a rock.

Is there any other grouper or grouper like fish that swims in the water column and would be active? Would a 180g be able to house a snapper or something like that? Any species?

In my experience blue-line groupers seem to be a bit more active than many of the other species.

1 -Zebra Moray Eel
1 -Blue Throat Trigger Male
1 -Aussie Harlequin Tusk
1 -Emperor Angelfish
1- Sailfin Tang (Red Sea)
3- Pakistan Butterflyfish
1-Yellow Tang
10-Chromis

I would like it to be compatible with the stock, I could eliminate the chromis if they are very aggressive.

I would like some fish that wouldn't be good for the reef setting.

I was going to say, you dont have to eliminate the chromis, the grouper will be more than willing to do it for you.

my blacktip grouper used to hide, now its out a lot, mostly begging for food. it doesn't bother any of my fish (all over 5").

they are supposed to have an adult size of 16", don't know if they get that big in captivity. mines about 8", hasn't grown all that fast.

here's a picture - looks a lot like mine:
