In my experience even a little fuge helps, make sure you frequently prune whatever plant you use to allow it to keep growing and taking out nutrients especially in a small space

I have a 110 gallon fuge and I have mine on a reverse light period. I have maintained 8.2 ph and it helps remove the nutrients. Keep the macro trimmed.
Any size is a good fuge, unless you're using it to propogate pods and such for tank food. The HOB versions work fine as a macro "greenhouse," which is how most people utilize a fuge... And yes, keep the macro trimmed it will lose function and get nasty when it runs out of room.
