Missing Fish Round 2

As the title says, I'm missing my new fish. Again.

Beginning of the week I picked up a royal gramma from LFS. They had a group of them. Watched them eat, seemed happy and healthy. Brought it home. Acclimatized it. Let it go into my 12 gallon tank for observation. It's set up with rock and sand and corals. Yellow watchman goby and a firefish already in.
He vanished! I read a bunch of threads of grammas disappearing, so I wasn't too concerned. He was missing for 3 days, then showed up dead RIP.

I picked up another gramma yesterday. Acclimatized and released. And he's MIA too.

Is there anything I can do to stop him from showing up dead as well? Move all my rock and try to find him? Keep my fingers crossed? Try to get the other fish out of there? I don't want to lose another one. Thanks!

That's odd. I not had one. Never jumped so I don't remember how they act except they always open their mouths to oncoming fish. Try a little acclimation box next time.

Gramma I had hid for the first day or two but after the first week was out and about all the time. Not sure what happened to your first one but they're shy fish and will hide until they feel comfortable

my gramma was my first fish in current set up he/she hid for literally 5-7 days without me seeing him/her once

I'm happy to report that he has been out today. Very skittish, but has been poking around a bit. Hopefully I jumped the gun worrying about him!

I've considered an acclimation box before. This might be a good time to invest.

The royal gramma is a great hider. My QT had a live rock the size of a baseball & mine would hide perfectly inside it so he could not be seen. Also, I think they will jump if startled.

If I could have only 1 fish it would be that one. Great personality.
