Missing leopard wrasse...should I go digging through the sand?

I bought what appeared to be a healthy and hungry female leopard wrasse a week ago, which I haven't seen since Thursday. The first couple days she was hanging out, eating frozen mysis, getting along with the other fish, and sleeping in the sand until the early afternoon. I haven't seen her in a couple days; assuming she is still alive, would sifting through the sand be too much of a stressor to the fish?

There's really nothing to gain by sifting through the sand other than quenching your curiousity, which is not worth stressing a fish out over.

When I worked at a store, we had multiple leopards come in and go into a sandbed only tank (no rock) and literally disappear for 4-5 weeks, then pop up one day like nothing happened.

NO. Read through the leopard wrasse primer if you haven't. It's in this section somewhere and has a ton of useful information and answers that very question numerous times.
