Mission Impossible: 90AGA

Did the sump fit through the doors? With my tank I had to remove a top brace and drop it in through the top.

I had to turn the sump on its side to slide it into the stand. I could have thought that design out a little better. No more leaks from the bulkheads, plumbing, etc.

I am building the stand for my 110gal this weekend and have been thinking of ways to combat the center front support and moving the sump in and out. Here's what I have come up with. I will be making on of the ends have removable paneling, that way I can slide the whole sump in and out without too much hastle. Just a thought, might be far to late for that on your stand, but I think it would make things easier.

So, when is the LR comming : ) ?

heres 2 things for you guys building stands, If your really worried about it doulbe up on teh 2x4's on the top support where the tank site but i dont really think a center support is all that neccessry unless you have a very long tank. All the weight is on teh 4 corners of the tank and stand. Just look at the cheapo metal stands they sell you can bends the angle iron just putting pressure with your hand.

It's been a while since I've had anything to post. I received my shipment from PalmettoReefs on Tuesday Night/Wednesday morning. The shipment got bumped to a later flight. I ordered Kaelini, Figi and Tonga Branch. It looks good and Darren was very helpful. Here are some pictures after I got the boxes home.

This picture shows the larger pieces on my coffee table. The table is 4' x 1.5'. I got some preety nice sizes of Kaelini, Fiji and Tonga.

This is another view of the previous pictures.

I placed mostly all of the rock in the tank. My first attempt a aqua-scaping doesn't look that bad, but I'm not really happy with it. I'll probably rearrange it sometime tonight and design it a little better.

I placed all the LR in the tank.

I didn't like the acrylic rods showing on the right side of the tank and the rock structure seemed a little unbalanced on that side. I had about 10lbs of rock fragments left over so I decided to rearrange the right side.

This worked out well. There are a few caves on the right side and a really nice opening on the left near the return. The middle has Tonga Branch at the top and is open to the back of the tank. It's very sturdy with most of the rock resting on the LR support structure. I'll have to come up with a way to hide those 90 degree side out elbows just above the DSB.

I did have "something" growing in the sand, but have no idea what it is. Maybe someone else might know?

I did notice a couple of travelers coming out of the LR after a couple hours in the tank.

It seems both are dead or dying.

My tank has been running nearly a week with the LR. The tank is still a little foggy and I'm getting some green algae growth on the rocks. I've seen a few worms (I guess) come out of the rocks and "disappear". I seen two about two days ago and another two yesterday morning.

I took some readings to get a baseline on what's going on in my tank. I've started dosing Kalkwasser to the tank and plan to add the detritivore kit next week.

Calcium (Ca) = 270ppm (needs to increase)
Phosphate (PO4) = Undetectable
Ph = 7.7 (needs to increase)
KH = 10.6 dKH
Alk = 3.77 mg/L
Nitrite (NO2) = Undetectable
Ammonia (NH4) = Undetectable
Nitrate (NO3) = < .02ppm

This is the first time I've used the Salifert test kits. I have heard they are the most accurate test around. Hopefully, this numbers are not out of left field.

This can't be good. I'm having a "little bit" of an Algae breakout in my tank!

The LR has been in the tank about 3 weeks. I started out my lighting schedule as follows:

Right-side MH light - 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
Left Side MH light - 1:00pm to 8:00 pm

Since there is nothing in the tank except the LR, I didn't think this was going to be a problem. I've since changed the lighting period to one MH light a couple hours a day.

I need to get some updated water reading and will post them as soon as possible.

u need to get a clean up crew in there !!!!
snails will clean that up fast :) did u get a diatom cycle?
it looks like u skiped right over & went in to the green cycle.
get clean up crew before u start getting hair algae & it goes out of controll.
ur sand bed should have more life then what i see in the pictures

I finally figured out why my clean-up crew was dying off - Clean-Up Crew. My SG readings are 1.020, which is on the low side, but still acceptable. My Turbos, Margaritas, Hermits and Emerald are all working away. Most of the lower lying rocks are algae free. I'll try to post more pictures of their progress.

Clean-Up Crew

Clean-Up Crew

I had to post the progress of my Clean-Up Crew. As advertised, these critters arrived and kicked a$$ from the time they hit the tank. In a span of 6 days they reminded me a why I needed them in the first place.

In the beginning there was...

They started from right to left...

Finally, I can see my LR again...

I've added some fish to my tank along with the Clean-Up Crew. There is one Bicolor Angel, one Scopas Tang, and 3 Green Chromis. I'm placing an order for the
Detritivore Kit this week to get the DSB going.

More pics to come.

wow - they really did their job huh? Seems to me that if they cleared all of that in such a little time, you'll need to supplement their diet or they'll starve.

I find that jamming a piece of nori between a couple of liverocks helps.

Is nori available retail/mail order? I usually put some seaweed in a clip on the backwall. The Angel and Tang eat some, but the snails get most of it.

arg! You're buying seaweed at the LFS? ouch. Aisian markets or in some cases, regular supermarkets have it. Look in the aisian section. It's dirt cheap. For like $2 you get a ton of it.

Random updates...

Random updates...

Just wanted to post some updates since I haven't done anything in a while:

-Last week my Bicolor Angel died. He just stopped eating and swimming. He looked fine, swimming around the tank with the tang in tow - they seemed to buddies. Then one day, he would come out of his hiding place and stopped coming up to eat. A couple days later he died.

-I've decided to redo my plumbing for my 90. I have a couple 90 degree elbows from the overflow to the sump. I'm sure it's causing some of the waterflow problems I'm having. Plus, I need a "quick" way to disconnected some connections to the tank - probably using unions and Flex PVC.

-I'm going to upgrade my Iwaki MD30RLT. Since I've added a 4' spraybar to the tank, I've noticed that the waterflow was not is good as it used to be. That's probably all tied in with the plumbing redesign anyway. So that's another weekend project.

-I've started dosing Kent Tech A&B since I couldn't find ESV locally - or cheaper than Kents. When the Kent Tech is done, I probably get ESV.

-Finally found a CO2 dealer in the area that's not going to charge me a arm and a leg for a used CO2 cannister. The cannister is priced reasonably, has a current rated date, and the fill-ups are not expensive. Best of all, I get to keep my original tank.

There will be more pics to come...

Your are doing nearly the same setup I'm planned... I'd love to see an update!

Great job so far!

Brewboy74 & bleu - I have been very busy with the tank and researching some of the live stock I have. I want to start keeping SPS corals, but I still have some design work to do. I'm planning an update after I redo my plumbing. Hopefully, I can get that done soon.

Thanks for the interest in my setup.

Update 13-Mar-04

Update 13-Mar-04

Since I won't be able to redo my plumbing for a while, I thought I'd post an update to my tank. Let me say that the learning curve is STEEP. Along with a little stupidity, I'v managed to overlook at few things. I've had an outbreak of "cyano like" bacteria. This has me very confused. I feed my fish once a day, but not very much food; enough that they eat for a few minutes. I have about 8 fish in the tank. Maybe I should change my feeding schedule.

My water parameters are in line:

pH 8.2
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrate 5 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Temp 79-83
SG 1.023
kH 11dkH

I have two 250W 10,000K bulbs that are on 11 hours a day. They are staggered:

Bulb1 9am-4pm
Bulb2 1pm-8pm

The part about stupidity is that I purchased a Big Time & Temp with the big LCD display. It has 2 reading, In and Out. They actually mean the opposite. I was reading the In display thinking that was the temperature in my tank. When my tank was really the Out reading. Needless to say, those lights are pretty good at heating a tank that has a canopy with no ventilation. My temp was running close to 90 for a few days, but my fish didn't mind. I guess they thought it was "tropical". So, I added two Icecap 4" fans. They were very noisy and had to be removed. I bougth two Orion fans and hardly notice that they are running. My tanks now runs about 82.2 to 83 in the daytime and around 79.0 at night.

Some of the additions I've made are a Lifereef CR, Tunze 6000 and the Orion fans. I plan to redo the electrical setup along with the plumbing since I have got wire going everywhere. That's more important than the plumbing right now.

Live and learn, right?
