Mixing groupers

I just had an incident with my 9 in long panther grouper. He decided he was going to eat a 5 in long rabbit fish. I saved the rabbit but now it means I have to start moving fish into different tanks I have 5 up and running now.

I was wondering about the possibility of putting the 9 in panther grouper and a 9 in lyretail grouper (Currently in a 46 bow) into a 70 gallon tank for a max of 6 months till my 500 gallon tank is ready. These are 2 of the most peaceful of the groupers. And they would be the only 2 fish in the tank. There is about 60 lbs of live rock in this tank.

What do you all think?

If were to do this should I place an eggcrate divider in the tank so they can see each other for a while?

Dude, you need a much bigger tank than 70 gallons.. you need at least 125. Groupers get large. I even think my 150 is small. Not sure how some people do it.

The 70 gallon would only be for a few months. Then they are going to be in a 500 gallon tank.
I was only concerned whether or not these 2 fish could coexist in in 70 gallon for the time being. Or whether they can co-exist at all. But thanks for your reply - Dude

if any of them will mix the panther is the best chance. a pretty hard and fast rule for groupers though is one to a tank - they simply dont play well with each other.

I thought most of the time that was with putting 2 panther groupers together or 2 Lyretail groupers together?
I have seen mixed results with a panther and a Miniata. The Lyretail is similar to the miniata.
The panther and lyretail have totally different coloring and body shapes. The question is whether or not their personalities would clash.

They SHOULD be fine. But considering they are both 9" long, there is a high chance of territory issues. If there's nowhere else for the two to go until your 500g, try it out and keep an eye on them just to be sure.
