Mixing salt

I'm having problems with high calcium levels -WELL above 500. I've done water changes, it helps a little bit but we have high calcium in our water. I'm using omega sea salt but was told to switch to instant ocean reef crystals to help with calcium levels. I've heard mixing different salts can be really bad, is this true? Was going to gradually switch over with each water change. Anything to watch for our worry about?

No issue switching. It would be best to do so as you described, slowly over time with each water change.

Also be sure your salinity is on target. Higher salinity means higher ca, mag, etc. Ensure you refractometer is calibrated.

Are you using tap water? In that case the simpler, and probably more cost effective, means of correcting this would be to purify the water through a RODI before you mix up your saltwater. Then you know that only what came from the salt mix will be there and water will be perfect.

You can also buy RO water at Walmart at the self serve water fill station for $.37 a gallon all you need is containers to fill.

All my other levels-ph,nitrates, nitrites, etc. were perfect. I don't have a magnesium tester yet. ...it's in the mail.

Air water ice, or bulk reef supply would be good places to start looking.

It will be nearly impossible to control parameters in makeup water and topoff water without using RODI. There are folks that do it, but they are the exception.

+1, the TDS is not high in my area but I still stick to RODI. Great investment to make for any reef
