can you mod a mj 1200 to have a wider stream like the seio but not change he flow (gph)? i like the way the mod looks but dont want that much flow. how much would a modded mj 400 flow

the hydor is a little big. never actually seen the tunze. i like the mj and i like my placement of the power heads i just want a wider flow path. i could handle a little more flow but not to much. i have all softies any more i think would blow them over. thanks for the options

I'm in the middle of mod'n my Maxi 1200's so I would suggets one of two routes. You can go to MJmods and order the medium flow props they have in the PROP section. Then reduce the diameter of the prop. Or you can go to the hobby shop and if they have the cheap airplane props you can reduce those and they'll work too.

To reduce the prop and keep it symetrical this is what I did. I went to my local hobby store where I found the proper carbon fiber rod and tube to use in the build. Then after everything was ready to be glued up I mounted the prop and glued it first. Then stuck the short end of the rod sticking out past the prop into my cordless drill. Then I spun the prop against a piece of 100 grit sandpaper while slowly applying pressure against the prop.
You'll be surprised how fast that plastic comes off.

I had to do use a plane prop that I cut down because the shop didn't have the boat props. Even with the modified plane prop the mod'd 1200 flow is awesome. At first it was way too much so I just started shrinking the prop until I got the desired flow results.

Although I just ordered an assortmant of props from MJmods to try out, I'll still use that method if the flow is blowing things everywhere.

I'll chime in since I just recently modded a 400 for my 29. I ordered the brown prop from mjmods and shaved it down to an 1" from 1.25". I ended up with what I estimate to be around 500gph.

I moded my 900. cutting off the out flow spout widens the flow projection. this area doesn't draw in water so it shouldn't increase your gph.

In my picture, you can see some of my three MJ1200 mods. I've replaced the standard impellors with a smaller Dumas prop thats able to fit inside the MJ1200 shroud. To produce a wider flow, you need to saw off the nozzle . . . the more you saw off, the wider the flow. I also drilled holes (~ eight or so 1/4" holes) into the bottom of the shroud for increased water flow.

thanks that is a deffinate possability. i might just try to mod a couple 400s. thanks for all the info everybody has.

I tried cutting off the front so the outlet is rectangular. The only thing I didn't like is that flow went to one side really weird. If the flow would come straight out but in a wider pattern that would be great. I kept starting and stopping and just letting it run and it never "straightened out" to my liking.

If you want a "straight" flow, then you should keep a small portion of the nozzle. If you cut off the nozzle completely along with some of the shroud, then you do get the flow going "hard left" and "hard right" with very little forward flow.

I have two mods mounted on the back of my tank that flow hard left and hard right as the wavemaker changes. My third mod is mounted on one side of the tank and positioned to flow straight through the front, it still has a small portion of nozzle remaining.

im going to do he stream mod but im trying to figure out how to mount it so that it will swivel. i saw one on here that was mounted like a seio. mounts from the bottom
