I thought everyone had stumbled on this one but I guess not.

I made one for the first time yesterday. Good freakin lord this thing moves water. I mod'd a MJ 1200 with the dumas 1.75" prop. It is said that it moves around 3000 GPH and I believe it. Plus it stops and start just like a stock maxi-jet. I am going to build a few more and I am willing to help anyone that wants to mod theirs. I post some pics tommorrow.

I need to gain access to my friends shop and make one. I'm sure he let me borrow all his tools in his wood shop. I'd love to turn up some sand in my tank :P

Could you make me one? I can send you the impeller. Once I have one then I can make them too. I have just been scared to do one myself.

Bob you're afraid of modding a $30 power head but when it comes to modding a $600 skimmer with a 5' extension you're ok with it? :P

Heck if all you need is a dremel I have one of those but it just collects dust. Wish I would have gotten the corded dremel rather than a cordless.

It would be great group project for some meeting. Nearly everyone has a extra MJ around.
I can mod one for you Bob but it rally is pretty easy. What size MJ do you have?

Blah see make one for the man who has everything but not for little ole poor me :P

So it matters what type of MJ you have? I have 1 900 and several 1200's which do they work better on? I agree it would be a great meeting topic and get some people some hands on DIY fun things to do.

I have 900's and 1200's. Just let me know what you need and I can send it to you or bring it over.

Once I see how you do it and get the parts list and where you bought them I can make the for others....even you Cbenn and show them too. Maybe even do a demo at the Frag Swap/Meeting coming up. (details to come).

Yah I'd love to do mine with just tools I have around the house. There's no way the wife will let me buy any more things after buying the EV180 skimmer and I still have to buy a sump from hung and buy the pvc for my return and overflow :P

Oh and I mentioned I had to buy a new pump too for my return. So what turned out to be oooooh honey can I buy this for 150 bucks turns out to ooo can I buy this one thing for 150 bucks and then spend another 250 making it work :P

I have a dremel but my main complaint about it was the fact that it is cordless and most of the attachments are for the corded version. Not to mention the cheap cutting discs were half broke when I first got it.

I think I've used it for maybe 1 - 2 things in my 4 years of owning it.

Here mine like I said the housing is a little rough but this was the first attemp and it is functionally perfect now. Kinda looks evil.

The coolest thing is I have a SEIO 1100 an this thing on one side of the tank so their moving over 4000GPH in one direction. The 4000GPH one way is neat but the real cool thing is the 4000GPH diffusily coming back to replace it. Even in the 150G it is noticable. My Sinularia is loving that back flow.

I'll help anyone make one even possibly build one for somebody but like I said I won't SELL one because I don't feel like getting "moved on".

Oh yeah I think I am going to make a magnet mount out of a mag float because the suction cups don't even come close to holding it down. It's got a 10# LR sitting on it now to keep it from skating around the tank.

I got mine at the Hobbytown USA in Davenport. Oddly enough right across the street from the LFS. It was the last one they had in stock but they were going to order more. I got the stainless steel shaft from K&K hardware and the plumbing parts at Lowe's. the link at the top has the place to order all of the stuff on-line.

I've read about these mods. If I needed more flow I think I would definitely try one. They seem pretty powerful. You may want to consider using a ceramic shaft instead of stainless as the stainless will rust.

Covey - What did you use for the housing around the Propellor? In the thread they used PVC and cut slots in it so it could connect to the twist lock on the housing but it looks like yours is just wrapped around and ziptied! Looks much easier. What did you put on the end of it to keep the prop centered? Can you post a pic of it head on, so we can see the end?

Carbon Fiber for the shaft.

Carbon Fiber for the shaft.

I used a carbon fiber shaft for the rod in mine. The nice thing about using the carbon fiber shaft is if the size is a little to big like mine was you can chuck it in a drill and spin it with some sand paper held around it, until you get the exact diameter you need.

I got a carbon fiber rod and a prop at the hobby town in CR for less than $10.

From what I read the MJ900 is the powerhead to go with because it is so efficient @ only 12watts or something.

wonder how soon MJ reads the thread and says HEY what a great idea and releases something official and charges 2x as much for it ;p
