Modern Integrated 50gal Cube...Build Thread!

This tank looks awesome! Great aquascape and nice equipment. That will give the corals plenty of space to grow.

Thanks reeftanker. I'm planning on stocking with a mix of acro/monti as well as acans, so hopefully I'll have enough room to keep them spaced well enough and give them differing levels of light and shade.

I need a probe holder! lol

I got my probe holder from tom at socaltropical....I'm happy with it and it even fit the fat temp probe.

looking good! keep up the level of attention to detail and quality of planning and your tank will be stunning in no time.

Thanks, hopefully this time next year I'll have a nicely filled in tank full of acros!

Seeded with a bottle of Reef Nutrition tigger pods tonight.... Here's the numbers as of last night (no3 was tested tonight):

NH3 + NH4 = .1
NO2 = .15
PO4 = .025
NO3 = .5
SG = 1.0245

Temp is averaging 79.4-79.8
pH swing has been between 8.14 and 8.19

SG has drifted down to 1.0245 due to my less than exacting topoff. My spectrapure ultra precise level controller today, so I'll get that up and running this weekend.

Ok Josh...........

UPDATE TIME!

Hahahaha, fair enough. I had to leave town unexpectedly, on a plane back from NYC as we speak. So my no photos up in the air update is.....I really hope my floors are dry and nothing has exploded when I get home! :)

Before I left, I set up the spectrapure ultra precise level controller and verified it's function for about 12 hours. So hopefully my topoff and everything else was taken care of. I also got a lot of wiring cleanup done. The last couple things to do gear wise is to add an extra high level float switch and also a low level one, both fed into the apex. Also need to get a water change system of some kind set up.

I'll run some more tests over the Next couple of days, but I'm not seeing he kind of ammonia levels I would like to during the cycle, so I may start to dose ammonia chloride this week. Rather not deal with the smell of a rotting shrimp.

I'll post photos in the next day or so....cheers!

Amazing setup

I dont know how I have missed this thread. This has to be the best looking setup I have seen :)

Thank you guys so much, it's been quite a bit of work, so I'm pretty happy to be at a place of temporary autopilot for a while during the cycle. Hopefully the contents will turn out as good as the build!

So, no disasters while I was gone (about 5 days), very relieved about that. Definitely has me thinking about possible points of failure though. The ATO has a backup float switch for high water level, but as I mentioned I'm gonna add another one. The only other real possibility for major problems I can see is the single drain and a clog that would lead to a flood. I'm thinking that I may put a high level float switch in the overflow box that would cut the main pump in the case of a drain clog.

I seriously can't believe it, but I'm pretty sure I have an aiptasia in a nook in one of the rocks (actually near positive). I'll check tonight when I poke him and see if it retracts. It either lived through in the dry rock (very unlikely), or came up from the sump off the live seed rock (also seems unlikely)?!? I'm a bit stumped on this little bugger, but either way, he'll soon meet a quick demise.

I'm starting to see some small signs of the algae cycle beginning, couple strands of hair algae and a few very small patches of greenish brown on the rocks. I'll test phates and trates and change media accordingly. I know I need to change my filter sock, it's pretty nasty.

If I'm going to start dosing ammonia chloride, then I'll hold off on ordering up the detrivore kits etc, as I don't want to just kill off the goodies I put in.

I'm confident that they transport in directly from hell.

Absolutely first-rate build.

Very well done and well thought out build, Josh. I have been, and remain, very impressed by your dedication and determination. Congratulations. I look forward to watching this grow.

Creefer, thanks much, I appreciate it.

So, to start things off here's some updated pics of the tank. I realized I hadn't posted anything since the water cleared up.....

Here's some of my wiring cleanup along with the Spectrapure ATO:

Some coralline (I believe) starting on the silicone....to bad there's not that much on my rocks yet ;>

About 6 days worth of skimmate:

In addition to the initial aiptasia, I found another on the glass.....both are gonna get nuked with aiptasia-x tonight (hopefully). Yesterday I also ordered up some pure Ammonium Chloride, but don't expect it to be here until early next week. I'll check my levels again tonight.

Here's the numbers from last night:

Ammonia: < .05
NO2: 0
NO3: .05
PO4: < .01
Ca: 370
Alk: 6dkh

Based on this I'm planning to use the ammonium chloride when it comes in, I don't feel like a got a strong enough cycle, so we'll see how fast the system can process an ammonia spike soon enough.

This time I used the more accurate calcium measurement (elos), so I'm not sure how much Ca the system is consuming because the last measurement had an accuracy of 50ppm while the latest was 10ppm. However, Alk is being consumed/dropping at .167 dKh/day from the last test. This weekend I'll get my dosing set up for those params and hopefully for Mag as well.

The lids for the dosing containers I got are too brittle and cracked when I drilled for the tubing grommets, so I need to figure something out. I'd rather not get to spendy on reservoirs, so if anyone has suggestions let me know.

If you have a local scientific equipment supply store, a wide variety of inexpensive containers suitable for dosing reservoirs should be found there.

Thanks bazineta, I'll give that a shot.

I am so jealous. What an awesome setup. Great job on the room.

Chem, thanks much!

Josh, did you used to live in South Florida? I used to go to school with a Josh Bryer.

Nope, I've always been california based....

Awesome thread! I'm starting/planning a 57g rimless build right now. You're thread has helped out very much. Thanks and keep up the updates!!!
