Modern Integrated 50gal Cube...Build Thread!

This whole thing is an engineered work of art. I'm impressed. If you don't mind me asking, what do you do for a living? I am in the process of choosing a career path that will allow me to maintain my lifestyle ( aka reefz), and whatever you do definitely hits the mark.

Hi-

Many thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate it and am glad your enjoying checking out the build.

I do CGI for films. As business models go it's, how do I say this...not ideal. Tough business to get started in, lots of international labor pressure coming (and already here), very high overheads. An especially hard service business. All that being said, passion, drive and work ethic are your friend.

Find something you really want to throw yourself into....success will come with lots of hard work, but at least you'll be enjoying it along the way!

Best,
Josh

Done for the day. Got all the pvc glued and set. Used Purple primer and red hot blue glue....man I think that stuff is the most toxic nasty substance on the planet :crazy1: Driveway is back in order and good as new.

Also got an access hole cut in the side of the stand against the wall. I was going to start drilling for pipes through the walls, but I realized I didn't have the right hole saw sizes. Weird, I could have sworn I had them...at any rate I was beat anyways, so it was a good time to stop and chill for the rest of the day.

That's one heck of a weekend project. Looks like everything came together nicely. Keep the updates coming

Will do on the updates. I'm super beat, but a little manual labor is good once in a while.

Now I'm thinking that, given the quantity of waste water from the ro/di unit just to make 75 gallons of water, I'm going to run a valve at the terminal end of the drain and tee off to a drip line.

Hi Camaro-

Here's a couple pics as promised...

Good luck in your build and landscaping!

Thanks for posting the pics Josh. your back yard clean and simple... like how you did the bamboo trees... looks really realxing there....

The bamboo is great for shad and privacy, but there's some downsides... Make sure you get a species that doesn't 'run', even then it's pretty agressive. Other downsides are the insane rate of growth (which can be good too), and the constant debris. On balance I really like it though. Those pics were taken a few weeks after we cut off 8'!!

Iron Maiden, Josh says it like it is. Find SOMETHING you want to do, throw yourself into it and success will follow. Don't choose a career path based on the success of another judged by money.
Pick something that YOU are passionate about, become the best possible at it and work it from different angles. Develop yourself into an indispensable person through hardwork and dedication. For only then will you find success.

I used to work at a job making twice what I make now. I hated it and it wasn't something in a field that I was all that interested in. Consequently I wasn't that good at it. I ended up quitting the job which is something I had NEVER done before. Making the decision was hard but it was a huge relief once I did it and let the boss know. I felt like i could breathe again. Money isn't every thing, important as heck....sure, but not everything.

wow stepped away from this thread for a few days and you have done tons of work. Looking great i can't wait to see this project holding water.

Not much going on, but the storage tanks came in today. Hopefully this weekend I'll be able to get the plumbing through the wall and the stand for the reservoirs built.

I have a question to pose to the genius RC hive mind.... I've been starting to think (worry) about how evap from the tank is going to affect the room, so I'm thinking of having a ceiling vent fan put in above the tank. It would vent to outside, and hopefully help combat any moisture issues.

My question to you is whether it's worth it. I know it can't hurt, but it does add cost (yet again) and isn't the most beautiful thing to look at and listen to. So, do you think the 50 gallons are going to cause a moisture issue? Should I worry, not worry? Thanks in advance.

Do you use A/C? If so that will take care of it. I don't think 50 gals is much to worry about, IMHO.

I've had a 40gal tank sitting in the corner of a bedroom for about 4 years and haven't experience any moisture problems. Your home's HVAC unit should be plenty capable to handle any evaporation coming off your tank. Being that teak is fairly waterproof, I wouldn't worry about it absorbing much either. The one problem that did present itself over time was the salt spray residue left on the walls immediately next to the tank. I got pretty lazy there for awhile, but if you stay on top of it I don't think it will be an issue.

Thanks very much for the input! I'm certainly less worried now....nothing like shared experience to put the mind at ease (or scare you half to death, depending...).

Ed. I should add that the A/C in that room is a wall unit, as it's detached from the house.

Tagging along for this build too. WOW. what a fabulous job so far! So this is your first reef tank huh? That is really impressive. It seems as though you have got all your bases covered. I wish I had done the type of research you have done when I started. Now I just have a head full of bad memories from my mistakes and a garage full of old equipment. You are doing everything right, and right from the start. kudos to you. Keep it up...
