Modern Integrated 50gal Cube...Build Thread!

Been super busy between work and family in town lately, so no real news...

Hey welcome back Josh! I know the feeling! How are those tangs doing in the 10G QT? I'm sure there's more room in there, maybe for a small black tip?:fun4:

How did you like the trochus snails? I'm considering doing those and not having any astreas because I'm so tired of half my purchased astreas dying from flipping over

I like the trochus snails a lot, they seriously mowed down a huge amount of algae. After I had to mass dose the tank with Mag for the bryopsis, three of them looked like they were on they're way to the great reef in the sky, but they made miraculous recoveries. The trochus/cerith combo has been great.

Tangs are good, added 2 more....there's more fish than water now, but I think they'll just work things out amongst themselves ;>

It's funny you mention the black tip... My aunt came over and saw the tank for the first time and her first question was whether I was adding a shark. I had to politely explain that it was quite a bit too small for that, and she said "How bout just a baby?" :bounce3:

I bought four trochus snails last month, and of all the snails I've owned, they're my favorite. They're fast, active, and rather nice looking. They eat like large turbos but without the size and coral bulldozing.

With regard to snails falling on their backs and dying, I've found that if they're drip acclimated, understocked, and have their dietary needs met, they never lose their grip. My astrea snails haven't fallen in the six months that I've owned them.

I found a baby trochus in my filter, so you have the possibility they will reproduce, but not to plague proportions. Have you gone with any hermits or nassarius snails?

So, I hit the two month mark on Friday....tank is definitely feeling more stable and I'm getting the hang of my routine. Still trying to find my Alk balance and per day usage, but I've got calcium pretty dialed I think.

Today I setup my water change system.... It should make things much easier until I get my auto WC up and running sometime. I used 2 of the pvc stub outs I had put through the wall; a waste line to the drain with a mag 1.5 to take old water out of the sump and another mag 1.5 in the equipment closet for new water input back into the sump. Tried it today and it works like a charm...turn waste pump on and through apex and drain, flip off then fill with fresh salt water. Under the tank it's getting a bit cluttered, but I'll straighten the new tubing out and maybe put a couple hooks in to hand the tubing/pump on. Probably will get another apex power module for the equip closet and one for the qt tanks, to make everything easy.

Spotted some vermetid snails on the rock, they're a pretty cool little life form. Still no real coralline growth, but I'm patient. Probably will add pom pom crabs and cleaner shrimp this week, next weekend I'm going to try to get the fish and coral QTs a bit more sussed out. Need to get some HOB filters, nano powerheads+heaters and start seeding some filter material in my sump.

I actually spotted what I think may be a baby trochus on the glass today. I'll keep an eye peeled, that'd be pretty cool. Just the one hermit right now, and I do have 3 nassarius snails...weird little buggers aren't they?

FTS please :)

Hi and welcome! If you look back to page 11, there's a FTS. Hasn't changed that much, just some snails ;>

hi there,
great thank thread mate! can i ask what ati unit that is? any links to it? im looking for one but i only have a 500x500x600 cube :(

Obviously you attended Montessori and not public school.

A few questions:
How does a computer graphics guy pick up the mad carpentry, plumbing and engineering skills?

Update? Two months have passed. Are you still in the hobby?

If not, I would like to purchase that rock scape from you. I have purchased the same tank.

Maybe some sort of personal crisis...Its hard to think that after all the efforts and expense gone into this system all is just given up on.

Hey Guys-

Appreciate the concern. I'm fine and safe, wish I had updates for this thread but I had to take the tank down due to personal issues. Next time perhaps.
