Mom can i have it ?

thanks for all the advice
i have not bought this coral yet i dont buy stuff without researching it alot before buying.

i do run my wter through a fridge filter so its not quite tap but ihave never tested TDS on it before but i still add conditioner

roger:
i do test often every few weeks and every thig stays the same

why would i want to dose anything if everything is where it should be exept high calc?
and yes it is a 180 with about 50 gal in the sump so 230 gal total
65 gallons is about 25 %
but i think i understand do more water changes and then i might have to dose ?

tcwayne lol yup my lion is like a little chihuahua lol that was funny lol

so what to do about getting coraline to start growing ?

(i need a mentor lol)

thanks everyone

there is always purple up - but thats mostly calc . sooo...
seriously i would just buy a ro/di or get some from your lfs and do serious water changes till you have changed about 200% of your water over the period of a month or so. but make sure you stay with the same salt and water. i would try purple up as well even if you just use a little. another thing- what is your temp like? is it high? how old are your bulbs?
where all do you go scuba diving at? you do any collecting? i do in west palm, but there isnt much close to over here in orlando/deltona area.

sorry about the confusion on the cal. levels I have been reading so many of these things I thought you were one one with cal at 320 sorry about that. Yes you are right 65gal is a normal size water change for that tank.

do you have an urchint? They eat coriline

You should have plenty of coriline with that high of cal and alk check mag levels. Also a 175W MH is not even close to enough light. Maybe you put this in before but what else are you running for lighting. T5, PC, VHO and what bulbs are you running?

before i got the halide i used to run vho only i was running 48" 2 dayslight and 2 actinic.

still under lit but was always good for softies

no urchin

but currently only 1 175 in the middle where everything is

its standard 180 6x2x2

and most of my corals are anywhere from zoos on the sand to about 12 " from the surface

a 180 should have a minimum of 250w X 3 for any kind of real SPS growth...

Even adding 1 250watt to the middle and move the 175 to the side for now would help.

RO/DI should be the first investment, however.

i plan on eventually getting 2 -3 250's eventually but for now i have heard people can get away with 175 on 18-24 max
but when the middle fills up i will get another and fill that side and so on

so maybe i should just fill the middle with softies untill i get a 250 for the side ?
or could a lowlight sps do fine if it is just high up ?
with great water quality of course ?

IMO you don't have enough light for that large of a tank unless you make a rack right at water level to hold the SPS directly under the light.

Not only that but to maintain the water quality you need for SPS for only a few peices dosn't seem worth it to me. I would get a TDS meter or go to the LFS and ask them to test it. because you may be fighting a lossing battle depending on the quality of water you are using for water changes.

alright looks like ill hold off on them for now untill i can get a ROdi and concentrate on water quality and raising $ for more light

guess ill just have to stick to softies for now
unless there are forgiving corals

how about lps ? frogs,hammers,bubble
could lps be more of a option now ?

It *could*, yes... It could take off and grow like crazy or it could just die. With great water quality and up high, a 175 is enough.

Try trading for, or buying a cheap SPS frag and see how it does first.

Can't argue with that! It will make your life easier/happier in the future!

bubble algae ?

well i got a peice of rock it had bubble algae on it about 8 peices in a cluster and after about a week they 3 of them turned clear and empty looking with the skin still intact and 2 days later there shriveled and gone
so hey i cant even keep bubbly algae alive lol
anyone every heard of that before ?
