Monkey's 300G reef

Very cool Thor, I am going to go looking for your thread... Thanks for the input, I wish more people would come make suggestions :)

AWESOME.................I also have herd about the super darts and wish that I would have gotten one of those, and probably will as time goes on as I want to eliminate a few of my pumps and try to run them off of one..........I havnt gotten to read through the whole thread yet but have you decided on lighting yet.......I have two 400w ballasts and two luminarc's that I will be selling in the near future.........

reread a little about the set up.......no need to reply on what kind of lighting..........take a look at my build.....I can help in any way possible......

let me know when you get ready to buy some.....I am going to be putting a single on a light rail and wont need the other two..........if i dont hear from you when I switch it out ill let you know.....I also have a dual PFO 5ft VHO ballast with new endcaps.........

Josh, I also have only a superdart on my CL. It splits off out of a OM 4way and each brach out of the 4 way is divided into 3 returns. So basically the pump is hitting 6 returns at one time. I have that along with a snapper as my return on my 160 and it is plenty of flow. I personally think If you do it right you could easily get by with a dart as your return and 2 supers as your CL's. I wouldn't run anything more than the dart as my return as I think you will regret that much water running through your sump. That's a lot of flow which can end up being a lot of noise.

The return is getting split between the tank, chiller, reactors, and potentially a future separate refugium. Hence the size there... We figured we could always tone it down a little with a couple ball valves.

I would make one of your drains go to your refugium. You could always plumb in a extra ball valve and then just finish plumbing and open when you decide to add it.

I think even a super dart would do the trick as opposed to a hammerhead. That just seems like a lot of extra watts to me. Not sure maybe I'm wrong though. That's just one large pump.

Barracuda is 4200 gph, right?? Superdart is also 4200 gph, just not as much head pressure. Not sure if the head pressure is a necessity but the super dart steps it up to 4200gph at only approx 160-170watts.

yep, were thinking with all the elbows required for the chiller, and reactors, and return that we will need that head pressure no?

It all depends how many you have. When I helped thor plumb his tank we used 45's as much as possible. If we needed a 90 we would us 2 45's if space allowed (much less restriction). It really all depends on how many you need I have a lot on my system do to space constraints under the stand for the OM. I guess it's just something you'll have to map out and decide if you'll have to many elbows or if you can get around some of them. I had 6 returns on my old 125g tank off one dart with plenty of pressure, and also fed my ref with it too.

It was a 125 gallon with a dart as the return split 6 ways across the top and sides (kinda like your drawing). I had to restrict the pump though because the drains couldn't keep up with it. When I restricted it I added a pair of Koralia 3's. The pump did just fine by its self though, before I had to restrict it.

Well we've found 2 more Lumenarc3's and 2 more icecap 250 ballasts.

Now we are looking for 1 more lumenarc3, 1 more icecap 250W ballast, and a couple Icecap 660's.

i think I figured out how to get the phone #'s off of the iphone so I will get some more of the novus polishing up.

hey cheeky, ive got a 300 gallon also, that i got up about a month ago, although mine is 96 long, 30 wide, and 24 tall, i used a barracuda for my closed loop it has 5 returns across the back of the tank between my two overflows, and just that one pump moves a ton of water, so much to where it will curl up thr front wall and across the top if i dont have them aimed right, and i use a dart for my return, i had an iwaki 70 for the return in the beginning but it was really noisy. i feed my refugium off of one of my downs and it works great. as far as plumbing the only 90's in my closed loop are where the plumbing goes directly into the tank, i found a pvc manifold which had 1.5 inch in and 5 1 inch outs, which i think made all the difference in the presure for my closed loop, and i plumbed it with flexible pvc. check out the website flexpvc. com , they have a bunch of cool fittings that i couldnt find localy anywhere, even true pvc Y's.
