Monkey's Reef - A photo journal [img heavy]

There are only two reef-safe triggers that I know of. Blue Throat (or Chin) and Niger.

And I know there are a bunch of triggers out there, so many that I never can even recognize them usually. So while I didn't recognize yours, I also can't say if it will be a good citizen or not.

Same family as the blue throat, near identical fish along w/ the crosshatch: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/oct2002/Fish.htm

They are becoming increasingly popular. Their family's eating habits and even anotomy are different (such as their upturned mouth) thus giving them different sources of food. Also, it so happens that most sargassums are absolute babies and quite afraid of fish much smaller than their size (read one thread here where some person's tiny goby chases their 10x larger sargassum around.

Mine gets afraid if a chromis goes after the same piece of food.

We'll see how he does, but I am not concerned from all that I have read and what I have thus far seen.

I'm not sure if I've commented on your thread or not. Anyways, it looks really nice. Already got a wide assortment of SPS going there.

I got a flame for my tank and so far he's been good, but I'm getting worried. Thanks for the idea with the 2 liter bottle if that time ever comes...

Very nice thread, I just read the whole thing. I guess you decided not to add more rock to your tower after all? I think it is a good idea to leave plenty of room for the corals to grow into. I think when first setting up a tank, it's difficult to leave the empty space because it looks... so.... empty!

I love that trigger, very very cool. More pictures would be great!

Mine was fine for some time, then one day started bothering my softies.. then stopped... It took him about 3-4 days to begin nipping on my SPS corals after they were introduced. Then he never stopped.

I hope he does well in his new home.. he was such an incredible fish.

Hermes my Sargassum Trigger has been doing great.

He has taken to eating both formula flake foods and mysis.

He is becoming less and less shy and has allowed me to approach the tank without hiding (though I have to approach slowly).

He has not bothered anyone and just sits in the current looking for food.

wooo woo photo update time!

Here are some choice photos of the new inhabitants along with a full-tank shot of the mounted frags.

Looks amazing, hows the skimmer workin out for ya?
Is that algea all over the rocks? Im tired so i could be seeing things.
I may have missed it, but where did you get all the nice frags from?

I am dealing w/ bryopsis at the moment. No other algaes are growing (though some are still alive, such as the deep brown which coats the overflow and some of the faux sand). The bryopsis is a nasty thing to get rid of, and im going to have to start pulling it out by hand. Worked when it showed up in the 20g (I polluted my base rock with it, which is why its coming back with a vengeance).

Good news is, the lettuce nudibranch is eating it, though quite slowly.

Also, the ASM skimmer is great. I am glad I purchased it, though I have no frame of reference or comparisons.

Looking good! I was reading in another thread that base rock can take a very long time ~1 year or more to start looking "live". How do you feel about your base rock vs. going with all live rock?

I have a bunch of nice shaped base rock that I was going to use, but I'm not sure if I want to look at bare rock for a year! I want to see some critters in my tank!

Looks Great Kong, I too have a 90g that was just setup two months ago. I moved from a 55g Breeder tank, to the 90g AGA MegaFlow just like you have. How are you liking the tank so far, and what size Superflow's do you have there.

I like the tank a lot, but could definetely see myself appreciating a larger tank. When I went to buy this tank, the LFS owner offered a 6' 125. I told'm I'd take it (same price as the 90 I was getting, but it came with a nice wood stand and canopy) if he could help me get it the 2mi to my house. He was unable to, so I had to go w/ the 90.

I have the megaflows, and setup the durso in the rear. I've got a mag7 return like you going into a spraybar. Im using 1" pipes for that. I had to use 3/4"->1" adapters because the outlet size on the megaflow is 3/4, and as you know the mag7 is 1/2.. so I have a ton of adapters and flex tubing allowing me to keep large diameter pipe throughout.

Ideally, I wanted a 120g, but the cost in price trippled due to me having to get a real wood stand (versus iron)

Thanks for the visit... I've followed your thread for some time ;)

Are those Seio 1100's your using?

Very nice, I just kept the overflow kit that came with the 90g all the same with the Durso and the return line setup. I tried to go with a mag 9.5, but there was just to much flow going through the sump and there were bubbles galore coming out the return. I had that Mag 7 on my 55g and just brought it right along for the ride, which is working nicely pushing 400gph through the sump.

Yes, 1100s. I wish they were 1500s, now. In the future I may end up purchasing a 1500 to replace the 1100 on the left, and moving that one to the otherside of the overflow -- we'll see.

Exactly on the mag7. I had that mag7 on a 10g sump in my 20g! Oh man did I learn my lesson on sump turnover rates. Therefore I kept it when I moved over, and it has been the perfect amount :)

What are your future plans for your tank?

Not sure on the future plans, except for some more Acro's on the left side and some more zoa's on the right side as well as a few Crocea's. I just got my first Crocea today, you can see the picture in my thread.

I just ordered a 2nd 1100 which I like the 1100's because they only use 21w compared to a 1500 using 34w. You can use 3 1100's for lower wattage than 2 1500's and get an extra 300gph, not only that but you get 3 different mounts for better circulation because your in 3 different area's to aim where you want. Just my thoughts on that. I have 2 MaxiJet 900's in my tank incase of a power failure and the Seio's don't start back up which has happened once so far. I will be pushing 3060gph after I put the 2nd Seio 1100 in there which is 34 times the tanks volume for water movement.

Photo Update time:

Not much has changed... I've purchased a pinpoint pH monitor and I've been battling bryopsis and bubble algae (DONT POP THOSE BUBBLES!!). I think I am beginning to beat the bryopsis (daily 5gal water changes has that affect).

Today a new Seio 1500 will arrive a long w/ a ranco temp. controller and a pair of heaters for the winter time.

Overall, the reefermadness frags are encrusting their bases, they are slowly regaining color, and night-time polyp extension is CRAZY.

My clam has not only colored up but has shown about 1/2" of growth on the shell.

I did some aquascaping, and am not satisfied, so expect the next full-tank shot to look different.

Here are my "Saved zoas"

Here's something im very proud of. Notice the upper left branch, not in focus? It had a large spot of white death (http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/reefer_frags/02.jpg) that occured during shipping. Well I am proud to say that polyps have returned to that area! the polyps are still white, but you can barely tell from the picture that there are infacy fuzzy things re-inhabiting that area!

And finally my full tank shot. Sadly, Hermes, my sargassum trigger was hiding and wouldnt come out.

woohoo..

So today I also setup the ranco control unit a long w/ my jager eheim heaters..

and right before I came home, I stopped at the LFS to see their new favites...

picked me up this beaut.:
