Monkey's Reef - A photo journal [img heavy]

Thanks, Melev. It's always an honor and a pleasure to get good comments from you.

I think after all of these months, I've got the tank heading in a positive direction. Now I just need to get that growth spurt every searches for!

I do have 2 gallons esv magnesium on the way.. all I dose is kalk, and I think the lack of mag. supplement has been one cause for my slow growth.

woohoo! it's here!

ASM G-2. To say that it fit "snug" in my compartment would be an understatement. I am glad i didnt splurge on the ASM G-3.

Next couple days I'll be trying to fix the hood and then I'll be able to install the MH and then order my VHOs once the layout is complete.

In the mean time.. the cycle continues!

Beautiful tank.

Only one suggestion. Add a hose clamp to your drain tube. Gravity will take it's toll over time.

Not really. It's been 9 months, and it hasnt budged. I used to check it regularly (and marked it so I could notice any movement).

It's wedged in there tight.

Just a suggestion.

I guess the $1.29 will break the bank.

Sorry if my response came off wrong, I thought the little rolley guy showed my good intentions :smokin:

If you felt how hard it is to budge, and saw how it hasnt moved at all in 9 months, you'd probably understand why I wouldnt want to even molest it at this point.

Don't want to crack/stress the bulkhead putting it on though, especially if it is a Schedule 40/Lightweight bulkhead.

Yeah, so my salifert test kit came in, a long with my 2 gallons of ESV magnesium..

I ran the test twice, and appearantly I have perfect mangesium. 1250-1300.

Great.

Magnesium cocktails, anyone?

Haha, similar story.. I thought I was having a Phosphate problem.. so I went to my LFS to see if they had a test kit, nope no Saliferts.

So I figure I probably have some so I put in like a $90 order (test kit, Phosban, the reactor, and a pump to run it). Ends up my phosphates were really low.

Oops!

haha.. ouch.. Almost identical story to me.

o' reef tanks.. you so crazy.

edit: also, if you're considering a 180g before the 120g, already, THEN GET THE 180!! :)

Don't worry.. I'm getting the 180g.. It may be a while cause I broke my leg so I'm out of work for a while (3 months.. gotta find a job I can do at home)

I am currently planning on purchasing a second MH light to replace my VHOs, and totally re-structuring my rock. We'll see how long this plan lasts. I wont pull the trigger for atleast another 2 weeks, so who knows.

Photo update:

Purchased 4 new corals this weekend.

First, a colorful frogspawn (my torchis so bland):

Of importance for me is the fact that the tips are no longer purple once in my tank. This fact has solidified what I wanted to do: change my ushio 10k for a phoenix 14k.

The following were purchased in South Florida and transported 4.5hrs north to Gainesville (only $75! woo!):

ID Anyone?

ID Anyone? (Brown, but has potential and is large)

And then a right-side-tank-shot to give an idea of their size:

cool stuff kong

about the first page or so you had a pic of LR cooking and you said you "feed" it. what do you feed it? i was thinking of putting some selco every now and again inside the bucket.

looks like everything will grow in nicely for you. like the progress. i just got finished setting up my 125g with a 100g sump and that is temporary. have to go off to college in a year.

haha... thanks for reminding me about one of my worst blunders of all time.

I wish someone had flogged me and beaten me for what I "fed" my base rock.

At the time, I was under the impression that a great way to seed your base rock was to use old water-change water, and get it up to speed with the rest of your tank. I was oblivious to PROPER rock cooking, and basically performed REVERSE rock cooking, where instead of slowly leaching phosphates and detritus out of your rock, I was putting it back in.

I wouldn't feed the rock anything. I don't know if you should cook base rock with live rock, cook it alone (it might never do anything) or just clean it off and use it, but I wouldnt do what I did, and that is "feed" it old contaminated water-change water.

Just wanted to stop by and show some newly snapped pics of my wannabe BB tank.

It has come a long way as I get closer to true BB theory. A few weeks ago the tank endured a major renovation whereby i removed my soft corals and spread
the SPS corals throughout the entire tank. At the same time i redesigned every aspect of the rock work to model those better BB tanks out there.
I used rocks with space underneath to allow flow and push detritus out.

I added a second MH fixture, another Seio 1500, and in the future will be adding a becket style skimmer.

This was the tank May 13th: http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/74-fulltank.jpg

And here it is today (note: in this first picture I cleaned the background up as I havent gotten around to scraping it clean of corraline since I redid the rocks):

O' natural background:

I am really really looking forward to the Seio controllers because right now my current/flow is fighting itself and though im nearing 60x+ turnover, it doesnt feel that way.

The back of the tank is amazingly clean. It looks like your tank just continues forever until blackness.

Nice Deresa clam too.

Tank looks good. I'd be interested in the difference that the beckett makes.

Some new pics of the frags. Some have shown growth since previous shots, but this is more to set up a new reference/base line since I moved them.
