Monster in my tank

The lights just came on and I was totally heart broken. I lost both my clowns and my manderin goby. Something went on a rampage last night. I checked my water parameters and everything is in check. So either I have a voltage leak or my Domino damsel is a serial killer. He is hiding today though. My coral beauty is in hiding as well and he has what looks like fin rot. My rescued yellow tang and green chromis look fine. Anyone know how to check for voltage leaks into the tank water? It can't be much voltage leaking because I'm not getting shocked putting my hand in the tank. ARG!

i dont know much about the voltage leak but i have had that in my tank i would stick my hand in there and it would shock the hell out of me but im not sure how it that works

Yea, I'm not sure what is going on. I would think I would get some sort of jolt if it was a voltage leak. The only thing I've added in the past month is a Phosban reactor. I wouldn't think that would cause this.

All you do is take a simple voltmeter and put the red end into the water and put the ground end into the grounded part of an outlet (round peg). It should read 0. If it doesn't start unplugging things until it does then you found your culprit.

I would start looking elsewhere. Start with a huge water change & keep doing them.

If it was stray voltage you would at least get a tingle when you stuck your hand in there. (try it when your heater is on, they are the most common culprits)

My guess is either something is poisoning your tank, whether it is something that fell/dropped in, or something in the tank died releasing toxins.

good luck

Yep, I thought ammonia too. That comes up 0. I think I will run and get new test kits. I'm inspecting my heater now and trying the voltmeter in the water. It was really weird that all the dead fish were grouped in the same location on the live sand. No one is admitting that any cleaning products were used in the area of my tank. I thought maybe too coral warfare. The clowns were trying to host in my zoos lately but I haven't seen the goby anywhere near them. Very peculiar....two years without any problems and all of sudden, mass death. None of the corals seem affected and my clam seems really happy.

Well no voltage leaks that my voltmeter detects. The coral beauty finally came out briefly and I noticed a white film over it's eyes. Is this ick?

Doesn't sound like ich to me.... ich looks like tiny white grains of sand on the skin of the fish.

Do a water change, run some carbon and check all your parameters. High nitrites can kill fish, as well as ammonia, low oxygen can also kill, say the power was off for several hours, every living thing in the tank will fight for oxygen and the more complex organisms will suffer the quickest (the fish, inverts etc.)

I've tested all the water parameters with new test kits and they are fine. It's some sort of disease that hit like a tidel wave. I lost another fish on Sunday morning. That is half my live stock in fish. I'm trying to get a quarantine tank setup to quarantine my yellow tang and green chromis. Do I need to use tank water for the quarantine or can I use fresh saltwater in a 20L that hasn't cycled?

No dont use the tank water that would defeat the whole purpose. Get some fresh water made up to temp & then transfer

Just an update. I've lost all of my fish. From researching it, I think my tank had a bout of marine oodinium (saltwater velvet) from the way that it hit so fast and wiped all the fish out. I wasn't able to save any of them. I can't figure out how it would have gotten into my tank, but I think I may have done a water change with a slightly cooler temperature difference. Would that have caused this? It couldn't have been more than 5 degrees off. Articles are suggesting running a UV sterilizer to control things like this. Does anyone here use one and can recommend what size to use for a 55? From the research I've done, they are suggesting waiting 3 full weeks before adding any live stock back into the tank. Would you folks agree with that?

When I get my water ready for a water change I try and get it close to the same temperature but I'm sure it if often much cooler than the water in the tank. I really have never seen any ill effects from it. I wish I could be more helpful.

I don't check the temp of the gallon or so top off I add to my 120gal tank. Sometimes its probably freezing. Never had any problems, but I am adding it to the sump. I would never add it directly to my display.
