I know there are Reef People in the Montgomery Area. There are too many salt water dealers not to have customers. A recent thread was started inquiring about stores in the area. Not many responded, those who did had not nothing positive to say, I was one of them.
I dont do a lot of posting, but I do quite a bit of reading. I believe if you dont know well you just dont know but you dont give improper or wrong advice, once that happens your credability is shot with me.
Our local montgomery reef store isnt a whole lot but its all we got so I try and support it.
I tried to support it when I was setting up my first tank and the owner, after seeing me eyeing a particular piece of live rock came over took over the sale and said dont take it out of the water, that's sponge on there and you dont want it to come out the tank and catch air - just give me $$$ for it and we will bag it here. I spent several weeks watching that sponge die and pollute my tank, praying for it, wondering about it before reading some info on curing live rock. I was new and didnt know
I tried to support them when the owner told me "you dont want a big tank, what you want is this 180 gallon. Big tanks are too much trouble" His former employee told me he pushes the 180's cause thats where his profit margin is highest.
I tried to support him through a bunch of uninvited BAD advice he laid on you every time you came in.
I have even tried to support him though his childish pouting he has been laying on me every since I bought my big tank elsewhere.
I believe I now need help!
I went in yesterday to pick up 2 large corals (Toadstool leathers) that I had left a deposit with said owner for. approximate value of the 2 corals would have been in excess of three hundred big ones. I told his employee please ring em up before he comes over, too late. As the employee was attempting to weigh a piece of rock attached to the leather (11 lbs told you they were big uns) he comes and takes over. These are to big for a bag he declares -true - we will have to put it in a bucket. The employee does, an old salt bucket.
On the way to the counter to check out, the owner say's "when am I going to get my bucket back," A little taken aback I say "oh I'll get it back to you as quick as I can," without taking a breath he says "can you get it back to me this week" I say "well I live about 30 miles away and dont plan on making a 60 mile round trip to return a bucket" "well what about next week, I need it back" I say with all do respect, its a used salt bucket, I am sure you,ve got piles of em back there, I have got several I dont need at my house" "No I dont cause people take em and say they will but never return them. I say "look, you are selling me some expensive livestock here and it kinda should be your concern to provide the customer with a way to transport his products home. By now his employee looks as if he wanted to shrink up. I said I tell you what, just sell me the one leather without the rock and bag it and I will be on my way. No that wasnt the deal, you said you were gonna buy both of them. I said I am not gonna buy something that you will not provide me a way to take it home.
Long story short....er. He wouldnt sell me one leather unless I bought the other as well ( with no way to transport it, short of kissing his....hand) I asked for my deposit back, he first tried to short me on it then finally returned it in full. His true feelings came out and he vented about the past, then invited me to leave his establishment. I did and politely waved good bye minus a few fingers.
Thing is people I still, through all this want to support my LFS.
It is apparant to me that used salt buckets are much more important than selling 3 bills worth of corals so I would ask that all local reefer's please take your used buckets by ( I know I will) so he can continue to provide a valuable service to the community.
