Monti Cap, Flow, and Scrolling Effect

I have heard that there is a relationship between the "scrolling effect" on mont caps and the flow they are receiving. Personally, I really like the scrolling effect and am thinking about adding a monti cap to my tank. How can I maximize its scrolling?

I'd like to know as well, however I dont know if the flow will make it scroll.

I always thought that ther were different kinds, ones that are flat and ones that scroll. I really dont know, myself. Mine grows flat

from my experience they scroll more with less flow, they nodule and grow thicker/upwards with more flow. I have seen your average red caps actually grow "towers" in highflow areas...

If you can get the flow to move across the cap in a side to side fashion, it will help it scroll. My old red cap started to encrust with normal flow but once I changed to an oscillating flow, it started to scroll.

I have different colors of monti caps (3 currently - orange, brown/purple, green/purple). Some grow flat, while others swirl. For the ones that do swirl, when I frag them, they also swirl. For the ones that grow flat, when I frag them, they're also flat. I'm not sure if this is always the case, but based on my limited experience, this is what I've noticed. Perhaps someone with more experience with these corals can chime in.

I used to have two species of orange monti cap in a tank with PC lighting, and put it near a pump outlet grate so it received a steady laminar flow. In both cases it scrolled very nicely. Some of the lower plates would eventually bleach out, as the upper ones would rob them of light. Of course remember this was in a tank with only 36w of PC light total. The coral still had some orange to it when the actinics turned on, but looked mostly brownish orange once the daylight PC turned on.
