So I bought a frag of monti cap about 2weeks ago and it keeps getting bleached more and more.I have a 20Long my lights are T5 96W and the frag was only 1/3-1/2 of the way up my tank...Ive always heard they need high light so I figured Ide start it out in somewhat lower light, but today I had to remove it from where it was in my tank and drop it back in the sand to see if it will color back up

& this is where it was in my tank

Monti caps do fine in medium to high light. If it's bleaching out it may be getting too much. I'd keep it towards the bottom of your tank with the lighting you have. Be sure it's getting decent flow too.

I mean if you see where I had it,it was some what low in my tank...so idk what im gonna do

It isn't from the light. You could put a monti cap under 400w mh at the surface of the water and it could handle it. Do you have any other sps in the tank?

I advise to not dose anything your not testing for. If your dosing alk every other day (one part of that a&b)in a system that doesn't use it it's most likely gonna be too high. My advice is to def invest in good test kits cal,alk ,and Mag. And something for PH also. JMO

New growth on these corals appears like a white edge on the coral. If that's what you see, it might just be growth. A photo would help us advise you.

Ur prob right about the dosing, but ive always used it and its done great for my tank but ive always had zoa&lsp...and I knw sps are way picky so Ill pick up alk/mag kit and start testing my tank....I didnt knw that would bleach the cap(now i know) figured only light bleached them....sorry a sps noob:sad1:

i dont know tried to just put the url of the image in and when you open the link to the pic its a blank pic....but o well its bleaching from inside out

I suggest simply maintaining stable parameters and leaving the frag alone. If the rest of your corals are healthy then the M.cap should be soon as well. A lot of hobbyists move frags all around their tanks when they first get them, and it makes it difficult for the coral to establish itself.

I think you're missing the point here. Get a Mag and Alk kit, and see where you are at. You want Cal in the 420+ range, Mag in the 1300+ range, and Alk to hold steady somewhere between 7-10. Number doesn't matter as long as its stable. Once you know where you are, you can figure out IF you need to add anything, and IF you do, you can figure out how much. Monticaps are pretty hardy, but its still a stony, and does require some form of stability. My monti grows like mad in my little nano. Its literally growing out of the water in some areas, LOL!

No im understanding everything...& I thank everyones in-put & help....I know i need to get the test kits, but what I was saying above is that im not dosing this week after my water change to see if that helps the cap any....I started this whole thread thinking that the bleaching was bc of too much light....didnt know sps could bleach because of some conditions my be lacking(only have zoas and lsp)

If you can't get the test kits soon, I would advise daily water changes for a few days to at least balance everything out for the time being. Chances are one of your levels are too high right now.

Look for monti eating nuibranch. They look like white hair algae. I added a couple sps corals to my all lps tank. The acro's and birdnest are doing fine. But my Monti's would start dying 1 by 1. Until one evening when my lights started dimming. I saw 3 of them eating away at my montipora, that was on the sand bed.
