Montipora ID please

Hi, I have bought this Montipora last week. I was told what type it is, but looking at pictures online, it looks no way like it. I was told it is a M. capita. But not sure about that...

Yes that is what it is. Coloration varies greatly based on lighting and position in the tank.

I'm not familiar with M. capita. Based on the few images I found, your coral doesn't appear to even bear the growth pattern of M. capita so I think you can rule that out, but that's just my thought on the matter.

Your coral has a plating growth form with visible coenosteum ridges, running perpendicular to the edges of the colony. This is just a guess, but I would say that your coral could be a M. foliosa.

.

That's what I thought... I was thinking M. delicatula maybe...

I think that is also a great guess. Although the coenosteum ridges (at least with Veron's example for M. delicatula ) don't seem as pronounced as they are on your coral. After typing that I'm noticing that the ridges are also not as tightly spaced and are also less regular than with M. foliosa, so you may be on to something!

Still, your coral appears to have rather thick plating which would not be typical of M. delicatula .
Montipora are very difficult to ID in my opinion. There is a great depth to the genus, that few hobbyists recognize.

I have talked to my lfs. I asked him if he could order me a M. capita. Two days later he called and I picked up this Montipora. So when I showed him a few pics of M. capita and of the one he sold me, he admitted, that it is a different one. He sait MAYBE... his wholsale retailer send him a capricornis. As it sounds similar (at least to his retailer... he VERY often sends veeeeeeery strange things).
Well, whatever the coral is, I like it. It's not the most exciting in colour or a super rare one. But looks healthy and will hopefully stay like that.

Either way, its a cool Monti. I highly doubt that it is a capricornis. What color are the polyps? they look almost blueish from the pictures.

Wholesalers often blow it when it comes to labeling things correctly, and rarely can one rely on the wholesaler to actually get the ID right.

Remember that your LFS directly benefits from you, so be advised if they are trying to get your cash by calling you up... telling you that they have the exact species that you are looking for. To me that sounds like a ploy. And I know you could be thinking, "oh I have such a good rapport with my LFS..." everyone wants to be your friend if the cash is flowing their way. :)

As Mark P. says, "Just saying"

I don't really speak very well of my lfs. But he's the only one round here. I don't buy fish there anymore, and now I am thinking about getting my corals somewhere else...

The coral has no blueish touch. It is really bright green. Well... it's a nice Monty and maybe, who knows... one day someone will be able to identify it :D
