moon coral

I've had a moon coral for about a year. When I got him I put him half way up the tank and he seems to be doing just fine. I've been reading that they should be kept on the sand bed. supposedly he will open up and grow really large if there are no sharp objects around. Is this right?

Here is a picture. When I bought him I was told it was an open brain. He looks like a moon coral to me.

Agreed, mine lives in the sand, but regardless if he is adjusted, I would leave him be. Moving corals around can contribute to lots of stress, and thus death.
