Moon Lights - LunarTracker - any effect on breeding?

I don't know anything about the product and keep all my fish outside under natural light. But, there is definitely a lunar spawning cycle for many fish - from tang to goby. It is common for the best days to be immediately before the full moon although some (like Centropyge) seem to peak a few days after the moon.

I just purchased the 5 light system, just got it mounted and reset on the tracker over the weekend. Does light up the tank nice, have to wait and see what effect it has.

Reefus, would you agree that each led is good for a 2' x 2' area? Think I'd be fine with a 2 light system for my 90g (48"x18"x24") ?

My tank is 6 feet, I have them spaced 3 in the back and 2 in the front, mounted about 14" above the water, they light up my tank evenly. Depending on the mounting height I would say they would light up a 2 feet area. If it did not you could always add more to the controller I would think.

FWIW, even though my fish cannot SEE the moon and are not influenced by it's LIGHT, the mandarins still seem to be tuned into the lunar cycle. They spawn more frequently around full moons and the week following a full moon. A few more months of data will confirm if there's a definite correlation but going into this third full moon cycle, so far things seem to be shaping up like the last one.

FWIW,

Just my experience with clownfish...

I have a lunar emulator in the brood stock room, it is capable of and is programed to simulate a lunar cycle by dimming a bulb. In messing around I set the cycle to be out of sync with the real world, i.e. off by one week. All of my pairs, despite not being to see the real moon light and seeing the simualted lunar cycles, spawn like clockwork to the real lunar cycle. All nest are +- 3 days of a new or full moon.

This has been on my "to do" list for a long time now, glad to see the thread. My broodstock area is approx 9' X 14' with tanks running along the two long walls. Where do I start? What type of controller and lamp(s) is appropriate? IOW just do it for me please :D
