Moonlights

I will be switching lights soon and my current set-up has moonlights built in but the new one does not. Where can I get a moonlight strip for my tank?

I second drs foster smith. Best price on the pods that I have seen, and I just bought some a few weeks ago for my new coralife elite hood. Make sure if you use drs.fostrsmith.com to instruct them you want fedex ground and not to use smart post. You can do that on the reefcentral sponsor forum for them. They check it and respond quickly.

IMO I would get the blue moon lights and not the white. Im not sure which is more natural (you would think the white) but, if you want to see anything in your tank at night I would go with the blue ones because they give off alot more light.

Is there any reason I should not use a single actinic as a moonlight? Seems like the wavelength is the same on the LEDs.

Would need to be an itty bitty actinic. If you want to go DIY, check out the bling bling section in the walmart auto dept. They have various rope lights and such that have blue led's. That with a junk 12v power supply and you'd be set. Prob no different $$ than a true moonlight setup though.

I picked up some LED blue xmas lights and white and was thinking of DYIing a set since my tank is so long. Basically stapeling it to the light rail and covering up a few bulbs with black tape :). The color of the blue LED's I got at big lots are pretty darn close looking to other moonlights I have had. I have a few sets if you want to try one since xmas is over :). I also got LED's with a little jewel looking cover on them and they look different and spread the light more. A LED gives a direct burst of light causing cool shimmer lines and can highlight a specific coral and a small actinic bulb just makes the tank glow.

Thanks everyone, I was just trying to use what I had, and I have a 2 bulb t5 strip and was just thinking about using it as a moonlight. Would it just generate too much algae growth or something?

TitansFan, my tank is 48".

I try not to DIY any more than I have to. I want someone else to blame if my house burns down.

Just food for thought but Lowes and Home Depot carry led light strips. I have one I think I paid $15 for and it seems to do great. Like I said just food for thought.

I bought the R2 Moonlights 48" strip length for my 90gallon. They looks awesome at night. Love them. Very bright and nicely packaged. They come in a variety of lengths to suit any tank.
