moorish idol

well i get my bonus at the end of this month and thats the only time ill have enough spare cash to get a fish, well for my wife to let me get a fish.

thanks for your help guys, my tank is full of many rare corals probably several thousand dollars worth of corals in it, im going to put it in there first because that is where i would prefer to have it and if it picks at my coral i can move it to the 125, also in the 125 is an achilles tang and a blue angel, those are the only really agressive one sin the tank are they compatible?

I would expect that the Idol will take a liking to some coral in your tank. It may not right away, but it will eventually. So if you care about your corals, I would put it in the 125 and not worry about them.

I had mine with an Achilles tang, Purple tang, Asfur Angel, Majestic Angel, Sohal Tang, and Emperor Angel, the only fish that bothered it was the Asfur who would chase it every chance it could. The Idol was the second fish added to the tank, and was well adjusted before adding the other fish. When an Idol is new, they are timid, and a I said before, need to eat often. With a bunch of established and hungry tangs and angels it may not get enough food. So, watch out for that.

I'm just going to make a side comment that seeing Moorish Idols in the wild when I was snorkeling in Solomon Islands in the spring was one of the most amazing sights I'd ever seen. All the ones I saw were in pairs. Really, really amazing, beautiful fish.

oh wow only 90 dollars? i was expecting more the lfs' around here charge 150 up usually for one. but they do seem to be quite healthy the lfs nearest me has had one that no one has bought for 7 months and it does great. do you think buying from the lfs would be too much stress after being transported to the lfs.

also i think i will just add him to the 125, im soon going to upgrade all the fish and everything in that tank to a 300 gallon to get a few more angels and tangs

I think if you find one that has been in the LFS for 7 months, then I would jump on that.

Mine cost $25.

i guess it would be worth it to spend the money to ensure a healthy specimen, it will go in the fowlr. what have you guys had the most success with feeding it? also do they prefer high flow?

Mine eats anything. Even when I first got it, it ate pellets. It did go on a couple of short-lived hunger strikes in the first few months, but I always got it eating again with Rod's food. Honestly, my Idol has been a very care-free fish for the most part. It has had mild ich twice, but easily recovered and it never slowed it down. Most of the fish in my tank died due to a large ich outbreak, but the Idol survived. It has really been a great fish.

Now its diet consists of mostly NLS pellets, and sheets of Nori. It definitely needs greens in its diet to keep its pennant growing.

im sorry for all the questions just the last time i kept them everyone was saying they were nearly impossible to keep and the poor mans moorish idol was a much better alternative but in my opinion true moorish idols are much more beautiful. i guess with all the advances in the hobby since i have attempted to keep one it makes total sense that they would be much easier to care for. thanks you all for the great info!

stick with the true moorish idol. if you know who the diver is and how they collect them your going to get a much better fish overall. i have delt with divers that have collected at 150ft and the moorish never live more then a few weeks but the better divers from hawaii collect their idols from under 10ft of water and i have never heard of a client of mine lossing them unless they quit feeding nori to the.
