More gigantea at LA DD

The green one was nice, I was thinking of getting it but I just got in the regular liveaquaria gig on tuesday so no space for qt.

I thought about it too but I was in the same predicament as you -- I just pulled my two gigs out of QT. So now the hunt is on. :D

I was going to comment about the purple on sale today.....seriously, $400?!!

Those prices are crazy!
What amazes me is that someone is willing to pay that amount (way above market price, at least here in California) well knowing that there is a significant chance the nem won't make it alive to the destination or will perish during acclimation.

SHHHH.... we're going to get an earful from those who don't live in CA. My wife flipped out when I showed her the price -- this was after I told her I bought it (which I didn't) but she didn't think the joke was very funny.

Those people with deeper pockets can afford to take the chance, especially those not near a reputable LFS. I noticed that here in CA many LFS take more chances with livestock because we're in close proximity to the wholesalers, which means we typically see more carpet nems available for sale, and for less money due to competition.

All that said, we're still responsible for QT. I recently calculated how much money I spent to QT one of my gigs, and it was easily $50 on salt and misc. supplies given that I was doing water changes everyday.

If, by now, LA DD has figured out a good QT protocol that can ensure that the nem won't need QT when it arrives, I'd gladly pay extra for it. No extra labor on my part and no worrying -- that to me is worth quite a bit. And, in the end, if it doesn't work out and the nem ends up dying, LA DD may even refund the money.

People in the Reef Fish section are probably laughing at us because they talk about buying a glorified convict tang for $1200 on DD. So to them $400 on a nice purple gig is probably no big deal. Haha. I personally would never pay over $250 for any nem. Don't care the type or color.

Our not so local fish store had these two green gigs. They were S/M size at $150 each and I thought that was expensive. But they got sold quick anyway even here in SoCal.

I would pay $500, maybe more, for a red mag with yellow tips if it were healthy and established. :D Or at least had the DD guarantee.

But that may be a unicorn, never seen one, not even a true red.

I used to think people are crazy when they would tell me something like this. But I stopped being judgmental partly because if I went on a dive or snorkel lets say in Fiji and saw an anemone that I liked very much...then I can see how someone would be inclined to pay a premium to remind them selves of their diving/snorkeling experience thousands of miles away. Same goes for expensive fish.

I'd rather spend that kind of money on a fish rather than a gig. Fish are more likely to show up at your doorstep alive, unless UPS delivers them to the wrong place ;)

I'll say it right now. I'd pay $3,000 for a true red mag or gig. Write it down haha.

You can call me crazy.

I think there are worse things you can spend your money on.

I got this guy 180 shipped. One of only 3 Gig that I got mailed to me that live

It's very nice and price is good given that it is an established anemone. We are quite spoiled here in SoCal. To Clorox and I (and other SoCal residents) it is weird to see an anemone get sold within less than an hour of being listed for double or triple the amount that we could pay here...not to mention the fact, as Clorox said, that gigs are such poor shippers.

Very true. Gigs are not good shippers in general.

I'd even venture to say that they're not good travelers. I picked one up from a LFS and 45 minutes later its mouth was completely inverted. Since then, when I pick up gigantea I ask that the LFS leave them dry in the bag (just enough water to keep them wet).

Back to price -- I'd be willing to pay twice the retail amount for a healthy gig. There is a store about an 1.5 hours away from me that is shipping their gigs direct from an exporter and are they are QTing the gigs at an offsite location. But they are charging 3x the amount of the price I'd normally pay, so they're a bit expensive IMO. I guess I'm just tired of QTing my own gigs, and my track record isn't very good. And I've gone through hundreds of gallons of saltwater!

Here in northern CA, aside from the one store I just mentioned, the price of gigs has come down and they are more readily available. The price ranges from $20 for a tiny brown gig to $200 for a large blue one. However, blues can be had for less than $100 as can purples. The last green I saw was $160 but I found another for $100 but didn't pick it up.
