No its the Nikon 105mm macro before the VR which I think has as good or better quality than the new VR which is overpriced. I would own any of the new Sigma Macro's over the VR. I really want the new 150mm.

Sweet! Did you have to turn your pumps off? My macro pics never seem to be that sharp, mostly because at the shutter speed I need the movement causes blur.

Very nice pics.

Thank you.
The pics are not taken through glass. They are taken over head through the water between 8 and 10 inches no flash and Aperature and manuel mode at between f20-f25. Nothing can be moving or its a blur so it takes about an hour for 8 decent pics.

Thanks. I figured they must have been perfectly still to get that sharpness. Not shooting through glass probably makes a huge difference too. I'll try that.

Wow.................kinda speechless on the quality of those pics........just wow..............

I have the Nikkor 200mm lens which I absolutely love. Keep the pics flowing:D

My Story

My Story

How are you taking the pics not through the glass? Underwater case?

Well here is my story on how I take pics:
I worked and owned a LFS for years and thats at a time when owning a reef take was really getting big. Many vendors then started to take pics of their coral and put them for sale online so I bought me a camera and started taking pics. I have a very bad problem with taking pics as I have Tourretts Syndrome and with the constant jerking and twiching of my body I could not hold a camera much less take macro photo's or be a brain sugeon.LOL
I had to figure out how to take pics so first I got a tripod and went to work with my new Nikon 995. Taking pics through the glass tanks at the store was terrible so I found somrthing different to try. I had been following alot of what Anthony Calfo was doing with his coral farm and how he used rubbermaid tubs to hold his coral in his green house. So at that time I wanted to do something different here in the are anyway so I set up a system of tubs in my store put eggcrate down and made a home for the coral till they were sold.
If you have ever looked down on coral through water it looks 10 times better than behind glass as saltwater refracts light so its almost opticaly pure. Well after seeing how the coral looked this way I said I will never own a normal tank again. So I made all my tanks look down reefs as they were much more colorful and better to get pics from. Well I no longer own a store or work for one as it is a hassle and insteas of getting better my Tourretts got worse so I left the business totally and started just taking pics of coral as I love looking at pretty coral almost as good as sex(almost!!!!!) So I started back here on RC and got pointers from the great people here and went to coral pics fulltime. I am by no means talented or gifted at this i just enjoy it and listen to what others say here on the boards like gregr and blaser88.
Sorry to make this message so long.
More pics to come.
I do not spell or type good so plase excuse the spelling.
Thanks for looking

I just cant the clarity through glass as I can through water(overtop).

Very nice pictures Matt.
Just one question As I'm considering getting the 105 Macro with VR?
Any specific reason why you don't like it? did you try it or just based your opinion on some reviews?
I realise VR is not really important in macro as you have to have the camera on tripod however when hand holding for insects... wouldn't VR be a lot of help?
Thanks for any input

The VR would be great for hand holding insects. The VR is a great lens but for me I could not see spending double for that lens over what I got. If I were to spend that much on a macro lens I would do what Blazer88 did and buy the new Sigma 150mm. As he is an awsome photographer and I saw were the len helped him acheive what he wanted in his latest pics to get more macro than he was getting. When it comes down to it if money is not an option then go for the VR105 and a good teleconverter or buy the Sigma 150mm with a good telecoverter.
