So I have this piece of live rock that was shedding all kinds of nasty stuff into my tank. Well I couldn't take it any more and pulled it out. OMG!! The smell on that rock was HORRIFIC! It smelled like death. Now my tank stinks and all my levels are bad. I have to do a water change tonite and probably tomarrow too. So now my whole house stinks and I don't know whats wrong with that rock. I don't want to throw it out, but there is NOOOOO WAY I'm putting it back in my tank smellin like that. What do I do and what's wrong with that rock? Oh and I'v only had it for a week

This normal, as life from the ocean starts to die off from being shipped half across the globe it will smell. I recommend that you take a scrub brush to all new uncured live rock and scrub off as much as you can. Eventually everything you didn't get off will decompose and the smell will go away.

No need to throw the rock out. If your tank as already cycled you can "cure" this rock in a bucket with a small power head and frequent water changes. Hope that answers your questions

Maybe there was a dead fish or crab or anemone or shrimp or something in the rock. You wanna name that LFS where you got the rock from? Is that the only piece you got?

Was it a tank with just other rock? Or was it in one of there display tanks? When you say sheding all kinds of nasty stuff, was it peeling like a bad sunburn or something that appeared to becoming from a crevice in the rock?

How long was it out of the water? or did you transport from the store to your house in a bucket of water?

I never had issues with any of the rock I got from Seascape that was "cured". Was it shedding when you got it or fter it was in your tank for awhile?

It started that night. I just did a water change. Things are looking better. I took it home right away(about a 10 minute drive). Not real sure what to think.

I'm sure the rock was "cured" but if transported out of water it may have dried off enough for anything living on it or in it to die.

Especially say a sponge.

I don't think enough would have died off in 10 minutes. I bought a bunch of liverock this weekend. It was put in a styrofoam box with some wet newspapers over it, and it took about 45 mins to get home, and another hour before I decided to put it in the tank. I didn't have anything die off on mine.
