More water flow for SPS?

the k-nano wont do a thing for you, you wont even notice it. you already have 2 k4's right? as you know they are very gentle flow and if you position them lower in the tank, about 8" from the bottom, and point the up at an angle you will be happier. This will allow you to get another k4. you should have that much flow, a k3 at minimum. they will be putting the highest flow at the top of the tank where SPS will be, and lower indirect flow lower in the tank, where LPS, anemones and polyps will be. Here's a pic of how my powerheads are set up:

i was kidding about the nano :D

great advice on placing the K4s on the middle-bottom of the tank and pointing them upwards. thank you downhillbiker :)

no problem. i think the K4 is what you need. you will be very happy. the koralias are very efficient too, the MJ is too powerful of flow and not efficient at all.

BTW. add a smiley face in your original posts when joking. i thought you were serious about the nano. :)

lol i did it on porpuse to see what you guys would say ("is this dude serious? All this talk about more GPH and then he goes w/ a nano. He's nuts :D)

You know, I truly like my K4s, but they're too big. I wouldn't want to add another one in my 90. I was looking at something more compact and not as expensive as the vortechs.

Filippo, I have a thought. Instead of adding another bulkey pump into your main system why not beef up your return pump? It doesn't cost $450 like a Vortech would. It's not how many gallons per hour you can blow around in system, it's how much water you can turn over total. I run 1000gph return pump.

Hello Salty Prate :) thanks for the input

The overflow for my 90 gallon is rated at 700GPH I believe. My return pump is an Eheim 1262, which easily matches that 700GPH and more.

How can I increase the overflow rate to 1000? By drilling another hole?

Thanks :)

Yea, I get your set up I'm talking about a hang on the back overflow box. E-bay's has 1200gph for $45. This way you don't have to drain your system and cut another hole in your tank.

If you position your powerheads at the top of the tank pointing up you will actually get more water movement at the bottom of the tank. Create motion in the tank kind of like a gyre where the pumps on the right are aiming towards the front and the pumps on the left are aiming towards the back. By putting the pumps like this the water works with itself to create more flow. At least thats what Jake Adams told me. Try it out and see. You may not even need another pump, just rearrange the ones you have

Hey tikidan, I was actually thinking to rearrange my K4s just like you describe (left and right), but from bottom to left like downhillbike suggested. will let you know :) thanks

the advantage of placing them at the top is it takes less energy to move the water at the top then it does at the bottom so by moving the surface water with less friction you will actually speed up the water at the bottom so you get more water movement through the whole water column. Does that make sense?

I just made this for a visual of what I am talking about

The way it was explained to me was that the sand causes friction that slows don the water at the bottom of the tank, so if you position the PH at the top it will create a faster water movement that will then take the lower part of the tank with it. Pretty much like a wind driven current can move tons of water by just blowing on the top layer.

When water hits the rockwork it is slowed down considerably and creates a turbulent spot on the other side where the water re converges onto itself.

I hope I am not making this more difficult than it needs to be. :)

i would agree with this. but with the pumps lower in the tank and pointing upward you get maximum distribution with the koralias. if you put them at the top the flow will be wasted when it hits the surface.

i too have mine one right and one left. and face them across the glass front and back. the bowfront really helps too, the water seems to really like hitting the radius surface.

the Koralias probably could sit lower since they do put out such a large area of movement. For something like a Tunze, I think those should be higher up in the tank.

fantastic explanation. both makes sense.

my only worries is that by having powerheads at the top pointing down, it "slowly" moves all the sand creating "holes" in the sand.

the way i have them right now, they're at the top pointing straight.

by the way, i tried my bro's seio ph (used 1 week, then put away), and guess what? it didn't even turn on - great. i'll never buy a seio myself. :D
