Morish Idol..the lesser evil or greater good??

So today i visited my LFS and i notice that my favorite fish to look at is still there after envy'n him for the past 3 weeks since he arrived. Beautiful healthy looking fish...

So im shopping around getting everyday supplies and eye'n up this cool blennie parked on a rock, eyes wondering everywhere that resembles something off sesame street and the manager comes over to feed the fish, "hows the idol doin?" i ask him and he tells me he's doing great as he squirts in some brine soaked in garlic. I watch and notice the idol immediatly race over and gobble up as much as he could before the other fish finished off the portion. "Wow, thats great" Then he tells me "watch this" as he throws in a pinch of flake and the same results! He's telling me now about how well he is eating and how is once damaged fins have grown back very quickly. Great news i think to myself, someone is really going to enjoy this beautiful fish.

Just then i ask him to bag up Oscar (our name for the sesame street blennie :lolspin: ) and i bump into this young family with a young kid and a handful of freshwater fish walking down the saltwater isle. I hear the dad say "wow look at that fish" to the mother about the idol... Then they start talking about how a saltwater tank would look great with all the color and exotic fish in there living room and sure enough the dad assured the mother that if they bought the needed supplies right then he would have it set up and all done tonight so she "should start bagging up some saltwater fish".

SCREW THAT!! lol not with MY idol.. brand new tank not even one day old and they wanna put fish in?? I had to.......

Longer storey shortend... Im now the owner of a "expert only" fish. I know, i know... but atleast he's got a very good chance at a happier life. So far all is well, dripped him for about an hour and a half and fed 3-4 hrs after introduction to tank. He ate!! He's not shy and gracefully swims around the tank and shows himself off as if to say "thank you" everytime i walk by the tank.

I am no "expert", have only been into saltwater for around 3 months, although i do have 2 highly experianced friends/neighbours at my calling at any moments notice. My water levels are perfect, i feed small portions 2-3 times daily and use a variety of 4-6 differant types of food with suppliments.

I will be sure to post some pictures tomorrow of the wonderful fish but in the meantime if anyone would like to share any suggestions or recommendations for greater success with this hard to keep species it would be much appreciated. Thanks for reading... wish me luck.

oh here the tank spec's...

125g with 55g sump using bean animals overflow system. Only running for about 3 months, but entire tank was setup and filled with water and LR from an already established system to make initial cycle short as possible. All fish have done extremly well since first day of introduction, except 1 poor blond naso that refused to eat since i brought him home and eventually parished. Other then that, no problems, no deaths, and fantastic growth! :)

Check into the angel blends of frozen foods. They have a great mixture of sponges, macro, mysis etc that will go a long way with keeping this fish's diet varied

You couldn't happen to paraphrase your question could you? Short and Sweet? :lmao: PS I love ur avatar:inlove:

some fishes are lucky ...

good for the morish idol... bless you for saving him ... now keep feeding him well with staple food and some frozen food with sponges (angel formula)

Thx guys although i am noticing a slight problem already..

It seems the idol isnt as aggressive when food is introduced as the other fish are and im afraid if it keeps up he might not get as much as he needs before the others consume everything.

Wondering how i can combat this without severly overfeeding my tank and causing levels to rise? Any ideas?

I'd have done the same, I wish you the best of luck.

He might take a while to settle in. You might need to overfeed a bit to make sure he gets enough until he settles in and gets more confident. What else do you have in there?

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I agree, overfeed for now, and up your water changes. You could try feeding some kinds of food from several feeding clips spread out across the tank.

I'd also continue the frequent small feedings. Maybe you can find a food the idol loves that other fish are meh about - have you offered nori sheets?

For now, I would get no new fish. If you want to increase the chances of the MI surviving long term, don't risk introducing new disease or aggression.

Good luck with the fish!

First, good work saving an eating idol from certain death! Can only hope the LFS would have said something before selling it off (it can't be THAT hard to move eating Idols) - I probably would have taken my business else where if I had seen a clerk do something like that.

You have the hard part, getting them eating, done so you have a good shot of keeping it long term. What are its other tank mates? Overfeeding should work fine assuming the tank is not super heavy stocked. If its competing with a couple of fast eating tangs, you might have to get creative like spreading out a few nori clips and then dumping in some other food so it gets enough.

Thank God, someone who knew something was there. I bet the LFS would have sold him to the potential SW newbs. A death sentence..

Sincerely,
Matthew

Ok heres an update and answer to the questions that have been asked since my last post. Im goin to be completly honest, critized or not. I did mention im no expert just a beginner and i expect to make mistakes but i also plan on learning from them while at the same time making the best of it..

First off, i think i found the answer to a good food source that the idol just loves and the other fish are kinda meh about. Ive read alot about it and heard good things so i decided to pick up New Life Spectrum Marine Pellets. The 1mm, sinking kind. The idol went crazy over them while the other fish checked it out and nibbled but prefered the usual food i offer. I will continue with that as well as my usual brine, mysis, flake, and differant colors of nori combo. I also might point out that i suppliment the food with GVH fish food soak. It contains "Garlic, vitamins and highly unsaturated fatty acids".

As for the tank mates.. (this is where ill probably get critized) but im probably at my max for larger fish in a 125g tank. Here is my current stock list alive and doing well in the tank.

- 1 Morish Idol
- 1 Small Yellow Tang
- 1 Medium Sailfin Tang
- 1 Medium Blue Hipo Tang
- 2 Medium Foxface
- 3 Medium Sunburst Anthias
- 5 Small blue Chromis
- 1 Small/Medium Blennie
- 1 Medium Stripped Damsel
- 4 cleaner shrimp
- 1 blood shrimp
- Assort snails....

So far all fish get along rather well and do not seem bothered by number of other fish in the tank. There is no chasing, routine swim patterns, or any signs (that i know of or can see) of aggression or stress.

Now time for a couple really bad pictures :p please excuse them. I am no photographer:fun4: Also u might notice the start of a small diatom outbreak. This will be handled this week, i believe its because the new light setup i got from a friend has expired bulbs that need to be replaced. Not tooooo ugly yet :worried:

Wow! There is sooooo much room in there to stuff sticks in! lol

And I am going to be brutally honest.... he looks amazing!

Looks great! 6 tang sized fish is probably a bit much for a 125, but its certainly doable if you stay on top of water quality :)

I'm glad you found New Life Spectrum, I use it and it has been amazing for me, and I've heard of a lot of people having great success with Morish Idols and NLS.

Thanks people. The top picture doesnt really justify how much room is actually left in the tank as its kinda zoomed on the middle section. Im going to be borrowing a friends quailty camera and tripod to get some quality pictures, so i will post up entire tank pics along with some specimen clse ups with the idol shortly.

I have noticed though that is streamer is definatly growing very rapidly and is much longer now then when i first brought him home. Looks amazing having this fine, silky, string dance around the aquarium as he swims. Quickly becoming one of my top favorite fish. Once he hand feeds (eventually i hope) he will have the award hands down :)
