corals compete for real estate. what usually permeates and spreads the fastest are the hardiest types that arent prone to temp/conditional changes. unfortunately, what will dominate a reef is not the most glamorous coral.....no cool name, just a lowly garden variety tannish acro that outlasts and outgrows all of the others, key word to the above described corals is 'close to the shore'. once you hit the open ocean and go to depths, the species are varied and will change greatly by locale. i cant find pulsing xenia withing a 30 mile radius from where im at....take a boat ride up the atoll, and you'll be tired of seeing it. you're question is open ended, and there is no good answer.
please note , im only speaking from my locale, as the corals in Bonaire, Phi Phi, Australia, Bali etc will differ. only my untrained, non scientific observations based on shear area coverage. whats really dominant where i live is whats shown....as well as lobo's. mountains of em.
