Most Popular Coral Groups

I switched to salt water a few years ago after many years in fresh water. I of course took the journey most did and started with softies. I still enjoy them and am still learning.

Can I assume most go from softies to LPS to SPS next? I see that on the RC web at this time are as follows: 20 people looking at the Soft Coral category, 61 looking at LPS and 271 at SPS!

Can one conclude SPS is by far the most popular category? If so, why is SPS more popular....are the corals more colorful and have a better variety or what? Isn't SPS more difficult? I have to say I have been focused on the softies and few LPS have snuck into my tank, but no SPS. What am I missing?

i went that route and just went backwards. I like soft and lps but i just cant get into SPS. I traded all my sps for many more lps.

1. LPS
2. SPS

Softies. I like a few zoas but they really need to be colorful in order for me to shell out $. If I had a bigger tank I might feel different but I don't like corals that grow really fast.

Maybe there are more people on the SPS forum because they're more problematic ?

Went the softies, LPS, SPS route and now I don't care if I have another pretty stick in my tanks ever again. One zoa/softies tank and two LPS tanks for me.

SPS were considered impossible to keep not that long ago. JMO but the challenge now is to not only have them thrive but how to affect their growth and coloration by manipulating the environment. Check out how many threads in the SPS forum are about lighting, flow, and additives. With SPS it's all about color and form ...........

boy this section of of RC is so popular the new threads bounce off the first page in no time. I hardly ever look past the first page of posts thinking they are old.

Good observation that maybe the SPS have so many issues that is why their tread is so active....lol

Okay, well I don't feel so bad having softies.....too bad I could get more thoughts....wait, if I respond it will take it back to top right....let's see if I get a few more thoughts...maybe a diehard SPS with some other input...

I think a softie reef can look pretty good.

So far SPS doesn't seem to agree with me. I'd like to keep them to provide some height in the tank, but softies and LPS are so much more forgiving, which suits me well due to work, family and school.

I agree totally with Agu. I do have some SPS in my LPS dominated tank and they are way more demanding and problematic.
