Most underrated Tang?

i vote for mustard tang (Acanthurus guttatus) as the most underrated tang...

i love this tank for its hybrid look of a gem tang and a sailfin tang...

The dussumieri tang if bred in small holding tank can attain a very nice interesting size. I've got a dussumieri for more than 1 year now, I remember when he was caught it was something like 4cm and 1 year later it's still hardly 8cm. But i must admit putting them in a 6Ft tank minimum give them more justice....:beer:

Hmmm, that's borderline cruel imo to stunt a fishes growth... my dussumieri grew from 6" to 11" in a year in my 210g. I wouldnt want to keep it in a small tank and try to make it stay small.

I can honestly say I dont like the mustard tang I've seen them while scuba diving and to me they are just another brown fish, I've never really care for them.

I'm planning to get a Chocolate (Mimic Lemon Peel) Tang. According to LA, it's a peaceful and easy to keep tang. I just love how the colors change from juvenile to adult.

Yeah they look huge and ugly. Nothing that attracts me at all lol. I'll take an ugly kole tang over that.

Of all of the tangs I have kept my top pick for underrated is the chocolate or mimic tang. Just a great fish, good looking and one of the smaller and mellower tang species.

I agree with the chocolate tang. When I had my 125gal, this guy was definitly my fav tang. A subtile coloration pair with a really mellow behavior, this tang is definitly a gem. When I'll go with another 6' tank, I'll definitly own another one of this beauty.:fish1:

+1 on Tomini. They are one of the smaller tangs also, which is a plus. My Tomini has always been a model citizen too.

+1 here, beautiful fish with a unique look. It may look drab in a LFS but get it home QT and then the DP you will see its a beautiful creature.

i think mustard tang is beautiful because it has the personality other tangs doesnt possessed. it can swim and swim, non stop!

and i also think dussumieri tang and fowleri tang is not an underrated tang rather an overrated tang... why? because price wise, its way too expensive over the net... (but in our country... its quite cheap and common... cost me $12 to get my fowleri and $10 to get my dussumieri).... you can only see its colors once it reach its adulthood... (adult specimen equals more than 12")

+100. That is really kind of a surprisingly ugly fish to my eyes. It looks like it's been kept in a dark closet for about 20 years.

Figured I'd post a pic of my tennenti as a juvy.
He was pretty drab at the LFS, and I got him soley for utilty/cleanup purposes, and he was small.
I was pleasantly surprised by both his colors and personality when I got him home in my tank, what a great tang.

From a collectors point of view....... Most dussumieri I catch are in the range 4-8cm. The holding tanks to acclimatize these tangs are generally the usual standard 4Ft tank. It cost a lot of money, to offer large tanks to these size tangs to swim happily but at this juvenile size it's ok. In nature these tangs can swim more than 25 Km throughout a day, based on this it's not a cruel:mixed: act to keep the tang in a somehow undersized tank but rather out of constrain. Mine which am talking was supposed for export, but it stayed in the holding tank for some time that we later decided to keep it for our display tank. In the wait of his new home he didn't grow that much:wavehand: ...though it eats like a pig.

By the way Are there mustard tang which is brown, because I see some schooling near our reefs are very lively color of black, grey, white dots and yellow/black tail. that's very weird, never saw a brown mustard tang or mayb am confused with the species...

yeah i agree with both of your statement that we cant offer any tang justice in our tanks because they swim km and kms a day in the wild....

and i also agree that mustard tang is not a brown tang... maybe those who comment that mustard tang is brown doesnt have a mustard or wasnt able to see a mustard tang in person... :spin1:

I'm thinking of a tang I see on DD every once in a while but I can't remember the name? It is a darker body with lighter colored polkadots all over it. It requires a 300 gallon tank so it must be a bigger tang. Any know which one I'm talking about?

Most likely Zebrasoma gemmatum. While a 300 gallon tank would be great, I wouldn't consider it a necessity. Most Zebrasoma with the exception of the sailfins are on the small side for tangs. You probably got the 300 gallons confused with the $3000.00 price tag

ill try to take a snap of my fowlr tank... its located in my parents house...

im from philippines so duss and fowleri is quite cheap here...
