so, i got a hold of a couple frags of shrooms. they are not mounted to a rock or anything. what is the prefered way of mounting it to a rock in my tank?

You can use a needle and thread and tie them on or if in a low flow area just sit them on the rock and they should attach themselves in a few days

i had a loose mushroom frag that i set on a rock in a low flow area and i attached itself. Use a piece or extra rock or somethng first and then move it to where you want it to be.

In a pinch Ill wrap it a few times with fishing line firmly but not too tight. I like the ease of working with bridal veil, but alot of softies these especially will often grow into the mesh material making it more work in the end.

If you are going to use super glue be careful because it takes a while to dry in the air but is almost instant under water. If you put the tube in the freezer it will make it a little thicker and easier to use. Also if you pull the shrooms out of water and pat it with a paper towel to dry it then put a couple of drops of super glue, you'll be set.

I collect and propogate Ricordea and have tried several ways to attach the slimey little bugars. :)

I've used netting (bridal veil) and if you don't have just the right tension on the rock, the rics will slide out of it... if you have it too tight, the ric can grow through the netting which is not a good thing either.

Super glue normally doesn't work unless the Ricordea has at least a tiny piece of rock its attached to...as they are slimey little things and will slide off the rock even after air drying them IF they have nothing to attach to.

Immediately following the slicing of my rics, I add a mixture of sand and rubble, put it in a small plastic container, add water and place the rics in the cup. Then I cut bridal veil to cover the top of the container and secure it with a rubberband and place it in one of our tanks that has low flow.

It takes about a week for them to attach to a piece of rubble or substrate. From that point, you can superglue rubble to rock with much more success.

Hope this helps you... and good luck!

well, one of my frags turned into goo. stringy goo and then disappeared. ( i think a crab ate it as that is the only thing in the tank other than the shrooms ) i had another shroom that was mounted to a small piece of rubble, but would never open up. it stayed all shriveled up, so i moved it underneath an overhang out of direct light, but never seemed to open up. then that one disappeared too. do blue legged hermit crabs eat shrooms?

Sorry bout your loss iflytoohigh, it happend to me as well durring my first propagation attemtpt. I put them in a container to attach to rubble like waterbug suggested but I used a vented plastic sheeting instead of a mesh material. Bad mistake, the plastic didnt allow for enough flow/ventilation and the shrooms stagnated into a brown sauce. So I used bridal veil from then on, but waterbug also brings a valid observation, too lose of wrapping and theyll slide right out of it, too tight and they grow into it. For this reason alone I now opt to just use fishing line, and firmly. When it grows into the line it is alot easier to cut the string and pull it through the specimen than trying to cut the mesh out of it( what a PIA that is!). Waterbug also made a good point in saying it usually takes up to a week just tostart to heal or attach to substrate, so dont anticipate it opening up immediatley takes a few days, even more if its new to your system and trying to acclimate to it.

i use superglue gel, and glue it to a small piece of rock and air dry for a few minutes. my shrooms still holding solid after two weeks in medium to high flow area.

i didnt know that you could superglue a coral inside water isnt that bad for the coral???????? i would be to scared that i would liik him thats y i wouldnt do it

soz *kill* him

No you would not kill him, but if they had a nervous system im sure as he11 they would be very angy and anoyed

A wide ruberband cut into a small square. Then a pin with a flat end to keep the rubberband on then stick the shroom right down the center into a rock. After a few days just pull the pin and rubber band.

Like holding together a club-sandwich?

Very interesting.... Where did you get the pins? Also... shouldn't the flat end of the pin be sufficient in holding the shroom down? What is the square piece of rubberband for?

can i use regular $1. store super glue gel and glue loose ricordia to a small rock and then use the glue to secure the small rock to a large vertical rock in my tank (underwater glueing??) is there any special kind of glue and are there any risks to this? thanks.

You can use dollar super glue but it must be Cyanoacrilic glue (spelling might be wrong), put it in the freezer and it will become thicker and easier to use. As far as gluing under water, good luck, super glue might take a few seconds to harden in air but underwater it is almost instantaneous. My suggestion would be, if possible bring the vertical rock that you are securing the smaller rock to as close to the surface as possible. Put a few drops of the glue on the smaller rock, out of water, and quickly put it to the large rock in the spot that you want it and hope for the best. You should only need a couple drops to do it.
