Mounting T247's over my 180 gallon - help!

I'm still in the planning and acquisition phase for my 180 gallon build. Well, more planning than acquiring since I finally have nearly all the equipment and supplies in place after buying the tank last month.

The one thing I can't figure out is how I want to mount 4 OceanRevive T247's along with an Apex moon light setup and a few fans over the tank. I really don't like the look of enclosed canopies that sit right on top. I like to look down into the tank and see the surface of the water as I walk by. I'm also seriously considering having my rock work break the surface of the water. I also know that I won't like just hanging the lights over the tank with cables coming down from the ceiling. The wall behind the tank isn't well suited for mounting anything serious to it either.

I want to enclose the lights in an open canopy design and hang it over the surface of the water. The first picture below from someone else's build is sort of what I'm looking for. The only difference being that I want to hang the open canopy over the water off of a L bracket and not dangle it from ceiling on wire or chains. I'm thinking of 3 or 4 L brackets that attach to the back of the stand that come out over the surface of the water where I can attach the canopy. I've drawn a diagram and included it below.

What I can't figure out is what would be the best materials to use to make those very long L brackets or if something may be available to purchase off the shelf. Can anyone suggest a source for those mounting brackets or materials that I can put together to build them? I figure they'll need to support about 25 to 35 pounds of canopy and light fixtures.

I'd also be open for any other suggestions for a way to hang my lights over the surface with a clean & neat appearance without using a sit on the top canopy or hanging something from the ceiling.

I mounted a shelf over my 60 can hung my light from it. Its not a canopy but it might give you some ideas. I'll take a pic and post in in a bit.

Thanks! I'd love to see a picture. I'm looking for all the ideas that I can find right now.

I bolted 2x4s to the stand and bought 24 inch shelftrack and brackets.

That sounds good. Hopefully he notices this thread. I can always buy a bender if need be. I just checked prices and you can get one for around $35. Could always just pick one up at Home Depot and bend a few pipes and then return it!

Where I could use the electricians advice is the best place to find aluminum pipe/conduit here in the city. Neither Home Depot or Lowes seem to carry it and I really don't like the idea of steel pipes being exposed to salt air. God only knows what might drip into the tank if they corrode.

I'm pretty sure Phife is an electrician he probably has a bender and could likely point you in the right direction on the conduit.

Thank you for the photos. Running 2 two by four's up the back is certainly going to provide a strong base for whatever you attach to them. I'm thinking if I ran a cross brace between the two 2 by 4's, that each one would support a L bracket like you'd use to hang a shelf. I could then lay the canopy on those L brackets. Definitely something to consider. :)

You could buy the Bender but being able to use it is a hole other ball game. Any electrical supply house would have it. I on the other hand would call a welding shop and have them weld some inch and a half square tubing.

Yeah, I was watching some Youtube videos on using the bender. My first thought was that I was certainly going to mess a few up before I got it right.

I will definitely give some thought on having custom pieces welded. I just always assumed that would be super expensive. I should just give a few shops a call and see what they would charge. Realistically, with all that I've spent so far, whats another couple of hundred anyway!

The conduit that you would be bending up cost over 20 bucks a stick. Depending on size it could be over 100 bucks per piece.

Shoot me a text. Smoothdog if I can't do it at work I'll get my welder going at home I don't need much for it just a 220 receptacle and breaker.

Thanks! If I go the route where I need some welding done, I'll definitely take you up on that. Can you weld aluminum? I always heard that welding aluminum was a huge pain.

Give me some dimensions on brackets and I can make some up at work. Since I'm a welder lol

It all depends on the welder you are using the one we have at work is kinda a pos but it's harder to weld than steel is for sure.
