Move to bigger tank

I am going to move from a 30 gallon to a 125 gallon in the next few months.

How should I go about doing it? Should I treat it as a brand new tank and put in all the sand and LR, let it sit then add the stuff from my 30 when the 125 is ready?

Or could I put the stuff from the 30 into the 125 right away, then slowly add rock using the 30 as a QT?

It's a decent upgrade but you should be fine just moving everything over and adding slowly to it. Adding rock is the tough part. It would need to be fully cured or clean dry rock. I think you may still have some algae and diatoms pop up mainly as a result of the new sandbed.

I went from a 72 to a 120. I used everything from the 72 minus font of the water at the bottom of the tank. I added some new rock and a bunch of new water and everything worked out well. When I did the 120 to 240, I used all but the sand. I used a few pounds of the existing sand and added it into the new sand. That worked well also.

I went from a 34 to 120. I kept the 34 running until the 120 cycled. I used new sand and went shallow. I also immediately put 3/4's of the live rock from my 34 in the 120. I also added about 50 lbs of dry rock. Took about 4-5 weeks to cycle and transferred everything over. Then sold the 34 :) Piece of cake. It's nice having the smaller tank setup while the new one cycles. It's also really easy to catch everything when you move the rock over.
