moving advice.

it's a 3 hour drive + 1~2 hr setting it up.

should i move livestock in plastic bags? or buckets?

If you have lids for the buckets I'd say buckets, the more water the better. Even better if you can pick up a few small BRUTE cans with lids and a battery powered air-pump. Livestock should be fine for a day that way (better than the transport to the LFS). Temps this time of year shouldn't be an issue.

Kigs,
Where are you moving to!?

That's a long time in a bucket. For fish and corals, bag em and then place the bags in containers. The rock can go in large Brute garbage cans.

Your water is going to drop in temp pretty quickly in 3 hours, that will shock the fish and corals. It could kill one and start a domino effect. I know, it happened to me.

Is it possible to have a small tank setup and waiting for the livestock for when you arrive?
That would be optimal.

Also, for corals, frag them before you go and give to a local friend that can give them back to you if god forbid you have a wipeout from the move. I know you have some nice zoas and they're easy to frag.

Bill, i'm heading back to my college in Rhode Island. :( It really sucks...because no other states can compare to NY. I knew I should've asked this topic earlier. I'm leaving tomorrow morning 10 AM, and I'm going to have 2 hours to completely pack the fish tank. so that leaves me no time to frag anything.

my original idea was like yours, to have a small tank set up for me there but when i asked about moving in a few days earlier, my college wanted $125 for an early admittance fee.

How long was your entire transfer process that wiped out your livestock? I'm thinking of just wrapping the zoos in paper towels then putting them in bags seperately. Then I will put the fish in another seperate bag. And finally LR and LS in a bucket of SW i prepared tonight like qy7400 suggested. I'm really nervous about this whole move but hopefully everything will turn out ok.

Thank you for the advice guys. I'll let you know how it turns out by tomorrow afternoon. wish me luck. :)

Good luck , and don't worry everything will turn out ok. IMO I would bring a bucket of freshly prepared saltwater so your not puting them back in the water they are shipped in. :)
all the best

It took me 8 hours (20 minutes of that was travel time) to move everything.

The problem was I finished at 3am and went to work at 6am. I didn't return until 7pm and when I walked into the house, it smelled like rotten eggs. I went into the basement and found a milky white soup in my sump and pulled out a Powder Brown Tang that had been half eaten. He was almost 10"s long! It was too late at this point and in the end I lost 95% of all my animals.

So just be prepared to watch the tank after the move and have water ready so you can do a water change.

I finished moving in last night and the tank transfer in overall, was a great success! I spent the first two hours setting up the tank, forgetting all other tasks. :D The only loss was a cleaner shrimp, which I had for almost 2 years. :( but other than that, everything opened up quickly and looks good so far. I just have to wait for the water to get less cloudy.

Here are some quick snapshots I took this morning with the temporary aquascape untill I can remember the old one.

When you're ready to frag the blue zoa, let me know. :)

it's only 2 mins away from me by car, so that shouldn't be so far on foot. thanx romain. :) The blue zoas are ready to frag now if you want to buy or trade. I just have to find out where the nearest post office is lol. Unless you want to wait untill I'm back in NY for the break? Here's a better pic of one of the frags.
