Moving from AZ to TN

I will be moving to the Brentwood area at the end of May. What should I be expecting in terms of a reef community out here? Are there any good local fish stores or do you guys all get your livestock online?

There's Three local stores that are reef friendly but some of the best stuff comes from Club members like myself. MTRC is the name and well worth joining just for the 10% discount at all the local stores LFS that is. Welcome to TN and MTRC you'll find everyone friendly and willing to help in any way they can. One thing you'll miss it that AZ weather I'm from Cal and that is the one thing I miss!! When you get in town shoot a PM and I'll help If I can.

FWIW, I'm originally from PA/NJ and I find the weather here to be spectacular :)

I don't want to pat our own backs too much but MTRC has definitely maintained a pretty thriving club and it is definitely one of the biggest in the mid-south area (we have in the neighborhood of 75 paid members for 2009... and that number is bound to grow throughout the year).

Size isn't everything though, and I think you'll find that southern hospitality is not lost on the vast majority of members.

We've just got some new leaders voted in and if they execute even half of the plans they've got, MTRC will be doing better than ever.

Our LFS's are pretty amazing in supporting us and we generally rotate meetings through them so that we have 1 meeting a year at each store. I don't know what you are used to in terms of LFS size and quality in AZ, but I've never really wanted for much in the way of livestock that I couldn't have them order for me (at least). If you're looking for really high end corals you might be disappointed, but in my experience you pretty much need to go online anyway if you're looking for the really rare stuff.

I already love the warm welcomes that I am getting. I will miss the weather here in AZ, but I wont miss the attitudes. When I was out in Tennessee about 8 months ago I was so happy with everyone that lives there and they way they treated me which is one of the reasons I'm moving to the area. I look forward to being part of this group.

I am enjoying all of this feedback! Do you hold meetings often, or do you keep it down to annual frag swaps?

Welcome to the area I am also a transplant I use to be in the Navy so I lived all over. I think you will like some of the stores they have a good selection of stuff and they get a long with the reefers. If you happen to be here house hunting or something on the 16th of May you could come on this trip it is going to be a blast.

but if not we will be doing more during the year.

It is a possibility I will be out there around that time, I have to check my schedule.

Kind of off note, but I see that scuba is in your interests. Are there any good lake dives or other freshwater dives out in TN?

You won't have to run your chiller nearly as much.......that and the MTRC is a great bunch of people:)

We have monthly meetings. 4 at LFS's, one joint meeting with NTRC (mostly centered around Clarksville), and one major annual frag swap in January. We had approximately 300 hobbyists through our doors at the last one (not counting vendors and industry representatives in attendance) and we brought Sanjay Joshi to give a talk on reef lighting. We had a lot of great sponsor and industry support this year which I thought added to the swap and we had a pretty awesome raffle.

The remaining 6 meetings or so are usually held at MTRCers houses.

One of the things the new board has been tossing around is the idea of having another "non-meeting" event once a month (or every other month). Going to Sustainable Aquatics is one of those...

go ahead & start sitting in a sauna for a few hours a day to aclimate yourself for the humidity LOL

& don't forget to jump out of the sauna & stick your head in a freezer to get accustomed to the quick temperature changes...swear i've never been anywhere else where you run the heater in the morning, the ac all day & then the heater again on the way home hahahahaha

lastly, every once in a while just throw a cup of water over your head to prepare yourself for the short & sometimes violent rainstorns that come & go real quick
....which really helps w/ the humidity :mad2:

welcome to TN

I told my girlfriend that we need to do all of the above to prepare ourselves....why does she keep giving me puzzled looks??.....HAHA

looking forward to the move!

btw....the rain one normally comes when the temps are just right. then it'll rain for 15 minutes & be humid as one of the upper levels of hell the rest of the day

YIPPIE!!!!!

I moved from IL 3 years ago and have not looked back... People here are great. I am new to the club and have been very impressed already.
